Description
After numerous requests, I have decided to make a tutorial on how I paint my Nebulae. I did my best to include every part of my process. I'm sure the thing is riddled with spelling and grammar errors. Just ignore those, there's a reason I'm an artist and not a writer.I hope you all can learn something from this. It took quite sometime to get it done. If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, don't hestiate to ask me.
I've included my custom cloud smudge brush that I use in all my paintings

Very helpful tutorial - thank you. I like your approach of only using simle tools like a round brush and a smudge (in most other nebula tutorials I've seen they used fractals).

TylerCreatesWorlds In reply to mechanicalvalkyrie [2014-01-18 20:05:31 +0000 UTC]
I really don't like the look of fractals, they look fake. So I've always tried to stay away from them forcing me to come up with my own method.

Might seem like a dumb question, but what do you mean by smudge brush? At 1st I thought it was the smudge tool because you speak of the "strength", but then you refer to opacity... so I'm confused. Β

Unfortunately im insanely busy right now, have like 7 projects for college (art related) to work on, all have to be professional quality > so probably won't upload it till December first. I will probably do a couple.

I know how that goes. College was a busy time, it's tough trying to juggle that many projects while putting quality effort into all of them. I watch you so I'll see it when you upload it.

Great tutorial! Really simple to follow and well written! I've never realised how much stars plays a part to define the feeling of the nebula.
Anyhow I was wondering, since my result always end up crap anyway, do you have an idea of how the nebula will look in the end? Do you already know where the light sources shall be and what shape the nebula will take? And do you paint all the layers knowing these things? Because looking at all of the pictures you painted, they seem to be quite random. Yet the end result always seem planned.
I think my problem could be just that I paint every picture too defined in their shapes and light, not letting the randomness decide in the end. Because how will I otherwise get the nebula to look the way I want!? (For example pillars and shits).
The tutorial is still great though!

Thank you so much, I hope it was helpful.
Β
For the most part, my nebulae are pretty random. I never know exactly what the end result will be until I've finished. Which to me is one of the best parts of painting these. It's a good blend of random chaos and order. I've learned to control the random aspect of the painting to fit my liking, well, I've learned to see the shape from my random strokes. Getting a good defined, yet natural look to a nebula takes some practice. It's what I had trouble with the most when I first started painting. Once I've got my shape, Im more direct in my design choices, but until then, its pretty random.
Β
I hope this helps you out some. Just keep practicing and you'll get better, everyone's got to start somewhere. You can look at my older stuff, its almost all garbage. But you learn something newΒ with every piece.
Β
Thanks,
Tyler

Yeah, that helped me out!
And boy do I know practice makes perfect! Though, looking at your earlier work compared to my earlier work, you seem to have evolved a lot faster than I ever did! xD
Anyhow, thanks for the reply, hope to bring an awesome nebula soon!
Cheers!
