Introduced as part of Japan's nationwide rearmament program during the late 2010's and 2020's, the Type 23 first saw service during the invasion of the Philippines. The outbreak of the Third Sino-Japanese War (2026-2029) and the invasion of Indochina saw heavy use of the Type 23 against the Russian made T-134. While the Type 23 is considered superior to T-134 (and the Chinese made Qilin Main Battle Tank), the T-134 and its variants outnumber all Type 23's (51+ million T-134's versus less than a million Type 23's) added to the fact that the Type 23 was far more expansive than the T-134 (a Type 23 cost about the same as 12 T-134's). Due to the
Forth Sino-Japanese War (2045-2058), over 500,000 Type 23's were lost, mainly in India. Since its introduction, the Type 23 is the main tank of Neo-Japanese Empire and its puppet states.
