Description
Here is a tutorial I have been working on for quite a while now. I tried to sum it up in 20 steps, but as you can see its quite long and quite big. The image is about 2 megs so it may take some time to load up.I used Photoshop 7 for this tutorial, so im not sure how accurate it is with other versions. Also this tutorial is sort of advanced so for those of you just starting, you may have a hard time understanding some things. Whatever you dont understand, simply look up in the help file to see if its there. If you still need help understanding some things, let me know and Ill see what I can do.
I covered a large section of clouds in the tutorial since that was what most people questioned me about. I hope I did a good job of explaining it. Enjoy.

One of the best! Thank you very much. I've been lacking in my clouds (well not just clouds to be sure, but it is my weakest point) this is actually the first tute on clouds I've read. I only just got to the clouds page in Alyn's tute... Well again, very good job and thank you.

You rock man, thanks.
Im going to dedicate my next work to u man for teatching me how to make realistic looking planets. All my planets iv made are just flat or have the same colorus and so.
This is the best iv made so far.

I LOVE this tutorial-- I'm just having a small problem with getting the textures for the brushes. I think I have a different version than you do of Adobe. What version do you have??

Awesome tutorial. I doubt I'll be building any planets soon, but it's great to see different Photoshop techniques.
In point 19, you mentioned: "It's a good idea to save your work now before you get started erasing your oh so precious clouds layer". Wouldn't it be better to use a layer mask, then? Or is it implied that layer masks are fine, but you're going to need to apply it sooner or later anyway, so you may as well save now while your clouds are whole?

True you could use a layer mask, and actually I believe a mask would better suit that part, I just didnt think about it. But Im not sure how long you could keep the mask, as the shape of the clouds will gradually change as you mold them, I will have to experiment with it.

Thats a truly stunning piece of tutorial there
I've used very similar techniques in the past to generate planet textures for 3D renders but your tutorial takes things that little bit further! Excellent.
Thank you very much for your sharing of these skills.. I guess there will be a huge increase in planets featuring in Dev submissions.

Bravo bud. Very nice tutorial indeed, if I ever get a chance, will try it out. Doing summer school uni papers atm, (Summer in NZ). Made the mistake of taking 2 papers over summer school, so I ended up with 4 hrs straight of lectures a day, and assignments (plural) due every week. Ahhh! But still, I will try squeeze in some time for more art or perhaps some variations of the nebula tutorial I was planning on doing at some time.. maybe...

VERY nice. I've always wondered how to get water onto my planets. I came up with a way but it was a lot more involved than this. Never occured to me to use masks. :-/ I'm retarded.
Anyway. Thanks for the insight! Keep going: you're quite good at this.
