"Hush," Daya Malik said, her voice but a whisper in the quietness of the abandoned building.

"I didn't say anything," Jonathan Bouchard replied, not bothering at all to keep his voice down. Daya glared at him over her shoulder, her dark eyes narrowing. She turned and the light of her torch blinded Jonathan for a second. "You did that on purpose," he groaned.

"No, it was an accident, I'm so sorry," her tone told a different story, "and I meant that I could basically hear your brows furrow. Would you please stop that and focus?"

"Remember how I told you that I'm not going to be your crime-solving witch on speed dial, Detective Inspector Malik?"

"Remember how I helped you catch the people who tried to murder your boyfriend and you, Mr Bouchard?" Daya replied sweetly, "And, I might add, covered all of this up because you were sloppy?"

"I wasn't sloppy, you were nosey."

"Same thing, really." She shrugged.

"And Matthias's not my boyfriend anymore," Jonathan added.

"Oh? What did you do?"

"Me?! Why do you assume that I-" She gave him a long look. Now it was her turn to raise her eyebrows and Jonathan couldn't believe that he allowed this control freak of a DCI to boss him around, "Velkan and I couldn't really stay away from each other. The breakup was amicable, though, if you must know."

"So you went back to your ex before that guy?"

"Yes."

Daya sighed. "Sometimes I wish I was a gay guy. At least then my mother would stop asking me if I finally found someone to marry every other week."

Can't imagine why a guy wouldn't want to marry you, Jonathan thought, but was wise enough not to say it out loud. His sense of self-preservation was stronger. And it was unfair, too. Daya was an intelligent, highly perceptive woman, had a career and was gorgeous to boot. She didn't need a husband to validate her. He wondered if she would get off his back if he told her that but it was doubtful. He was stuck being the crime-solving witch on speed dial for now. And there were worse fates than that.

I redesigned the DCI who briefly appeared in a picture a while ago. And I gave her a new name to match the necklace with the D on it that she is wearing. Nothing special, really, but I like how this came out. I did to a lot of those torch in the darkness pictures with the last incarnation of Jon before I switched software and rebooted everything with StarEyedOcelet so this is kind of a throwback
