Description
85% DONE (2)Yes, it's that time of year folks where once again I take it upon myself to completely re-model my stargate, never being quite happy with the last one!
Differences with this new one?...
> Made from scracth to be completely interchangeable between the SGC gate and the Atlantis gate, with as few alterations as possible (i.e.: chevron textures & inner glyph ring)
> Decided to rebuild it all to make an overall cleaner model. I guess you wont notice much difference when it's completed, but the otehr one had polygons that really did go off at tangents! (Damn booleans!) Now this is a perfect clean model in comparison and I will show the diff when completed.
> Where-ever possible everything is more detailed. EG: everything has a chamfer to some degree to smooth off the harsh edges.
> All details are modeled up from one object. Note the close up of gate model 4 in my gallery and ull see the iner track is two seperate pieces for the square diamonds things and the engraving oval part (you should know what i mean!) - The new version is all extruded, beveled and modeled directly from on initial tube.
> There are other chnages, all too tedious to mention but too important to ignore.
PLEASE VIEW AT FULL RESOLUTION AND COMMENT ON HOW YOU THINK THINGS ARE GOING SO FAR (FOR BETETR OR WORSE BEFORE I COMPLETE!!)

Erm, I've thought about it because a few people have asked.
Do you want it for something?
Thing is though... I'm quite protective of my work and don't really want to release something that people can claim as their own - if you understand?

Sorry for the late reply.
I'd rather not share the model for that kind of purpose.
It feels a little like taking too much of my own work.
Hope you understand.
I'm still massively interested to see what yours looks like though!

YOu did quite a lot of work on the details here! A lazy person would do it with textures
Anyhow wow! the symbols surely took some time to model too!

Hey man, you are doing a great job on your new gate!! 2 Big Thumbs up!! Im glad to see someone with an eye for the detail!! Ill prob re-make my own gate in Maya sometime in the future, as its the new program I am learning in. My old gate was modelled in Lightwave, so it will be an all new challenge!! The thing I like about your new gate so far is how clean the lines are!! Nice job, cant wait to see the finished model!!

Maya is difficult to learn from my experience, and quickly gave up. Good luck, and I can't wait!

Well its what we are learning in class. With lightwave alot of it was self taught, so there are a few problems with my Lw model!! Meaning that there are probably ways to make it that would make it far easier to do, than the way I went around making my model!! But with Maya we are being taught it properly, so I have a better understanding of how everything works!! So when I get some time, and a copy of Maya at home, ill start working on it!!

Sweet. Keep me posted!
No prizes for guessing why i'm on version 5 of my gate model then - each time I appraoch it slightly differetly they way I model it because of what I have taught msyelf in the mean time. At some point I'll do a montage image showing all the versions from 1 through to 5. Version 1 is laughable and thus so far has been avoided being posted! Version 2 isnt much better but you can tell a dramatic difference. Version 3 bear a resembalance to what you see now, and is hidden somewhere deep in the very first postings I did in my gallery. all the details on that were pretty much textures. Version 4 then took that further and made the majority of the details polygonal, but not exactly the cleanest model. Version 5 are the WIP renders you see before you now.
**ahh, to be a CG designer!** LOL

Haha, I should also post all of my own models from way back when!! I was originally using a cheap modeling program called Flying Fonts, and my last model in FF, I thought, turned out pretty good!! Even though the finer details were also textured, ill post them up sometime!!

On and off for about 3 days now, couple of hours per-day... so I'de estimate about a good 10 or so hours so far. And it still isnt done. I have the zig-zag engraving to do on the inner section tha you can see with the ovals on right now, and still have the back side section equivilant of where the glyph ring is. Not to mention texturing which I've decided I will do differently this time round. Thanks very much BTw for all your comments, very much appreciated!
Do comment on the further updates in the coming days. Cheer.
