Description
this is a tutorial i did for an art group several years ago, it's more of a why trees do what they do than a how to draw them but hopefully people find it useful. all drawn in computer with no mouse so the art kinda sucks.Related content

So that's what's indicated by those ridged 'holes' on the sides of some trees. Thank you for the explanation.

I'd love to see a photo example. (If you meant to include a link in your note above, I'm afraid I don't see one.)

My own photo? Oh, the bole at the lower end of the tree, in the foreground? I should go back and see that tree again, see if it's sent up a new shoot or whatever other changes it's made to itself. Might be interesting to photograph every few years.
Is it odd that it looks as if what was formerly the main trunk is now gone? I wonder if it became diseased and the tree 'switched' to another branch to use as it's main. I should also look into the angle of hill it's on as well as that might be part of the reason.

the bole is one, there are smaller ones all up and down the trunk, it's a cool tree with lots of history written all over it, it might be disease but probably not as it's still alive, my guess would be wind.

You're noticing more about the tree via a picture than I was able to recognize being next to it. Wind would make sense. Being on the edge of an open space, on a hill, in an area that gets blizzards, yeah, wind and heavy snow could snap a branch or even a whole small tree. I'll take another picture of it someday.

Yeah I love trees because their entire history is written on them, it's fascinating, I've been obsessed with them all my life, I spent years drawing pretty much nothing else and they still get to me, when I see a cool old-timer with hundreds of years of storms and droughts and wind, falling rocks and erosion, there's just nothing like it.
