Description
With the popularity of my Disney Female Faces tutorial [link] , I decided to do a few more tutorials for beginner artists. One of the most important art principles you need to learn is perspective. Perspective can turn a flat drawing into a dynamic illustration. The first you need to learn is the 1-Point Perspective.
It sounds and looks simple enough, doesn't it? You simply draw a horizontal line as the horizon, place a dot somewhere along the horizon, and then sketch guide lines radiating out from the dot (like spokes on a wheel).
I used an landscape sketch for this tutorial, because I feel landscapes are the easiest and help a new artist get comfortable with drawing guide lines.
My Advice: Use soft, feathery, quick strokes when sketching. Ignore your eraser. This is PRACTICE so it's okay if the drawing is not perfect. Don't give yourself too much time to think, just draw and draw quickly. Once you are done with one sketch, draw another and another. Practice, practice, practice! But, most importantly, have fun.
Anyway, I hope this tutorial is useful to someone, and I will be doing more perspective tutorials soon.
Edit: Bumped up the contrast so each panel is easier to see. Also changed the font of in the notes at the bottom. Enjoy!

I'm so glad! Yup, perspective is a lot simpler than it seems, and once you get the basics, it makes sketching/drawing much easier and faster.

does this work the same for drawing a subject such as a motorbike? or would i need to use some other form/

It depends on what angle you want to sketch the motorbike. My suggestion would be to do a Google Image search for a photo of a motorbike in the angle you desire, and then practice drawing that. For example, this photo of a motorbike [link] could be replicated with the 1-point perspective if it has a very low horizon and the vanishing point is far to the left. I hope that helps!

That is wonderful! If you post the finished piece to your DA, be sure to let me know. I would love to see it.
Hopefully, come March, I will be able to do a few more perspective tutorials.

You are very welcome! I am overloaded with school work at the moment, but very soon I will be doing a few more perspective tutorials that you might find useful, too: an indoor 1-point and another outdoor with buildings; 2-point perspective; and maybe even 3-point perspective.

If I had a road that straight, I'd need a sports car.

Oklahoma has long, straight roads like this, only the roads are so poorly maintained that all of the crackles, holes, and bumps would probably destroy a sports car in a few miles.

Nice tutorial. I think it's really helpful in explaining how to do a landscape. Are you planning on doing any tutorials with a 2 point perspective?

jacquelynvansant In reply to mizz-izzy [2010-09-20 20:10:52 +0000 UTC]
Yes. First, I am planning two more tutorials using 1-point perspective (one interior and one with buildings). Then I intend to do 2-point perspective.

Thanks for the advice... Will we get to see perspection in something like *thinks* like a room (a pub) of some sort

jacquelynvansant In reply to Mattokenzi [2010-09-20 17:00:00 +0000 UTC]
Actually, yes. I am planning to do an interior 1-point perspective next. Would you like it to be a pub/bar?

Mattokenzi In reply to jacquelynvansant [2010-09-20 19:55:32 +0000 UTC]
Please and Thank You ^_^
I draw alot of heroes/characters (all the time) but I never once done backgrounds or settings before, yes I would like a pub/bar for the next lesson. (but if you are unable to do it, then I'll be happy with simple interior)

jacquelynvansant In reply to Mattokenzi [2010-09-20 20:15:26 +0000 UTC]
I am the same way. I drew people for years, but moving on to backgrounds seemed daunting to me until I learned more about perspectives.
A bar/pub interior would be fun to do and useful. So the next tutorial will definitely use something of the sort. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks! Yup, landscapes like this are one of the best ones to do when learning, because they are not too hard and 9 out of 10 tens they look great no matter what your skill level.

No prob!
Yes, but I still have problems with drawing f.e. buildings with perspective T.T
