Description asked me to help him with his 40K SPG project, "Colossus" [link] and think of a shell loading system. Initially I was going to draw just that, but I had too much fun designing this, so I ended up with a suggestion for the look of the whole thing.

The two heavy bolter positions are based on the MG position of the real world M7 "Priest" SPG from WW2, and the improvised sandbag spall protection is a send-up to Japanese warships who used the same method to protect their vulnerable unarmoured bridges.

When firing the gun, the crane will be at a 45 degree angle, as depicted here, and the shell loading tray will be stowed in travel position.

Someone saw a picture of the Karl-Gerat and thought, hmm, I can do better. Cool design though

Is it bad that when I saw this at first I instantly thought "Mini P.1500 Monster"

Not really, because that's exactly what this - big gun on tracks...

You should totally draw the Monster and the Ratte (P.1500 and P.1000 respectively)

need bigger track or when it shoot, it may will "do a barrel roll" lol~ but good work~

I don't think so. I think the forward mass of the engine + armour is enough to anchor this beast in place, and, besides, the recoil is also absorbed by the recoil cylinders on top of the barrel.

SOS101 In reply to wingsofwrath [2013-10-29 22:22:27 +0000 UTC]

but still, the gun is heavier then the engine and the armour, plus that gun got huge caliber even the recoil (by it size and looks like only got two) not really do much~

because it got small and sample track system, fire the gun, the tank might jump it self a little bit~

Oh, I hope so! It's supposed to be a fun little project.

T57 with turrets much?

Heh. The T57 is probably only American SPG I didn't use as reference, since I modelled this mainly on the M7 Priest, the M41 and the M40/M43.

I might use some reference of this for a basilisk I'm building is that okay?

Well, you should also speak with first, since the whole concept was drawn for him, but as far as I'm concerned, sure, go for it.

"Where guns are concerned, there's no such thing as 'too big'." I thoroughly approve of WH40K goodness!!

The Russians have managed to apply that mantra to pretty much anything. As the joke goes: "The largest dwarf in the world is the Soviet Dwarf".

Yeah, 40K is ridiculously over the top and it's a shame I never properly got into it, but then again I wouldn't have anyone to play it with here..

Oh, it's TONS of fun, yes ^^ On the other hand, it's a horrible money sink. I don't even want to start thinking about all the money I've put into that. Doing drugs would be cheaper.

Heh, I hear you on that...
I do both reenactment and airsoft, and that's even more expensive...

Sir, if I could, I'd kiss you. I hoped you could just give me some extra pointers, but instead a get a whole concept drawing!?
*faints*
I'll print this and pin it to my workstation

I'm glad you like it. I was a bit nervous you would find my little ideas encroaching on your creativity...

Please do, and if you need any more concepts you know who to call.

Durnstaros In reply to wingsofwrath [2012-05-29 01:20:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't find it encroaching. I did ask for ideas, I'm still the one building this thing in the end and I'll end up changing a lot of details, but you gave me solutions to several problems at once here.
I feel like I should pay you back with something though

Yeah, but still some people do get angry at me for "overstepping my bounds", and, of course, I have no way of knowing from the onset what type of person I'm dealing with. It happened before, so better safe than sorry...
Glad to see you are not the easily offended type.

My pleasure. It was me who volunteered to help, so no "payback" necessary. Also, the offer still stands if you need some more concepts for other projects.

By all means, be tempted. I enjoy this kind of design work, even though I can't promise I will be as prompt next time, due to my shifting work load.

Not going to make any deadlines for you..

If you do feel like it, an AA tank based on the same chassis would be great, I have some ideas but not sure of the style.
That it fits the basic Hydra flak tank profile is the only requirement, i.e. two twin cannon as armament.

Even though I haven't said anything in months I haven't forgotten this and I hope to come with a suitable design shortly if you still have a need for it.

It would still be a great thing, but I'm afraid my model projects have taken a back seat at the moment, as you probably noticed on my profile page. Mostly been doing leather and steel projects.
I have a half finished vehicle based on this picture sitting on a shelf, but not sure when I will manage to finish it.
