Description
Some older (circa 2009) concept sketches for "Inner Space".I won't disclose too much about the world in which the graphic novel is taking place, but suffice to say there are two empires (and a few smaller nations) locked in a technological arm's race, cold war style.
The technological level is somewhat equivalent to our world's during the 1920s, and most machines are twists on old favourites (entirely justified in-universe, but I'm not going to talk about that yet).
A composite drawing (in real life two different pages from my sketchbook) detailing the two main fighter aircraft types in use in the "Inner Space" world.
Because rubber is unheard of in this universe, the best method of launching and retrieving aircraft is by hooking the trapeze on the top wing to crane like structures on the ground, which provide safe deceleration. Manoeuvring the planes around the airfield is done either via special trolleys or by overhead rails in hangars and on ships.
On our world, These kind of operations were successfully tested with the so-called "parasite fighters" of the flying aircraft carriers "USS Macon" and "USS Akron" as well as the post-war jet powered "Goblin" designed to protect the XB 36 "Peacemaker" strategic bomber.

Love the Interceptor. Maybe they should use a trolley rail system like the Wright brothers used on their later flyers, then use retractable skids to land with.

Well, no definite date is set. For the last couple of years stuff has been bad for a variety of reasons, so I had to focus more on doing paid work than a my own personal projects. But I still keep working on it, rest assured and it will be released on DA first.

Wouldn't skis, or even solid wheels, whithout tyres be more practical?

Please bear in mind that without rubber high pressure applications such as pneumatic and hydraulic shock absorbers cannot be possible, so we are now talking of an aircraft coming in to land on solid wheels, without any form of suspension beyond simple springs.
Fine for early fighters, which had a top speed of approximatively 100Km/h and went in to land at about half that speed, but downright scary for anything more powerful...
I'm sure there were tests, accidents and redesigns before people even conceived this form of landing to be optimal, but, when you look at it in perspective, the idea of a fixed landing tower that could safely decelerate any oncoming aircraft (under a certain mass) with the aid of simple pulleys and weights doesn't look as outlandish as once thought.
Of course, for larger aircraft the only way to get under way safely is from water.
Also, the mechanical means required for raising and lowering the landing gear would also be prohibitively difficult to make, again because of the lack of suitable sealing materials. By contrast, even in our world, there are engines that use leather gaskets, so that wouldn't be a problem.
As for skis, well, while in this world it does get colder on occasion and more extreme forms of precipitation such as hail, sleet or snow are sometimes present, a solid blanket of snow is completely unheard of, even in the mountains. (on the contrary, the mountains have a hotter climate, rather to some special world characteristics that will be explained in-comic)

Yes. And at least one of them is patterned very closely on a design which actually flew, if only in prototype form. The other one is completely fictitious.
