Description

An Elder Nightlight is something I didn't quite expect to hear about, but I'm not surprised that someone would come up with an elder fury eventually. In fact, I'm pretty sure that there are also at least a few fanmade elder Nightfuries out there... not to mention Silver Willow Wing sketched out an amazing concept of what a 1,000+ year old Toothless could look like.

The issues I had with the Elder Nightlight's design were:

- This Nightlight had too many tail wings- and they looked more like extremely weird fish fins than anything else...

- The Elder also had the same issues that Thunder and his parents had, to a lesser degree. The most obvious of these was the weird Skrill/Woolly Howl wings popping back up...

The New Elder Nightlight still has an impressive 10 nubs, which I imagine translates to better than average hearing for a Nightlight, not to mention very expressive! His head is now much closer to a Nightfurys in appearance, barring having fewer spines running down the central ridge than his predecessors had. Like the Nightfury, the Elder Nightlight now has a row of spines running down his back, which replace the tail wings. The Elder Nightlight now also has a more overtly Nightfury like body and tail, with virtually the only signs of having Lightfury ancestors being an increased number of rays in his tail wings, and some patches of white, particularly the ones on his throat and underbelly. I imagine that the "mitts" on his paws and the white patches along the trailing edges of his wings are less signs of Lightfury Ancestry and more patches of very faded scales/skin due to stress and/or age. For him, this could be the equivalent of a human being getting gray hair due to old age... or getting it prematurely due to experiencing massive amounts of stress almost constantly. I would also speculate that being an elder- possibly even a Titanwing, he may be more powerful than even Thunders parents are. Alternatively, he may be at the age where he's starting to lose some physical power, but he can make up for it with a lot of experience and knowledge- experience and knowledge that he could pass down to younger Nightlights. Either way, the Elder Nightlight is showing no signs of slowing down just yet. I speculate that he had a mate, but said mate may have- in the best case scenario- left him and his offspring... or at least those offspring that chose to stay with him into adulthood. Given that Skrills and Nightlights are said to be rivals, and that territorial clashes between the two are common, it's more likely that a fight between Thunders tribe and a flock of Skrills went horribly wrong and the Elders mate was seriously injured and left for dead or else killed in the fighting. I don't think anyone has brought that up to the creators yet, so if they've thought of it, they'd most likely address on their own terms, and in their own time- perhaps in a future episode, a flashback plotline, or perhaps a seperate short film that ties into the Nine Realms. They might not even do that, but instead talk about it in a social media post, like how they confirmed that Thunder is the product of Hapsburgian Inbreeding...
