Description In service for the better part of a standard century, the OI-104 low-orbital interceptor has become a familiar sight to anyone transiting the space-lanes, and seemingly will continue to be for many decades yet. Originally intended to intercept drop-boats and other landing craft launched from orbiting warships, the 104's role is now considered by most to be obsolete, with money for a successor being argued as better spent on hulls capable of keeping an enemy fleet out of orbit in the first place; a view shared by a Terran Admiralty focused on defending Earth's expanding empire. Be that as it may, the 104 still fills a key role in Terran defensive strategy and, as such, the ageing interceptor continues to soldier on with little sign of relief.

Though OI-104 units are rarely considered front line any more, it has found a secondary role giving Naval trainees their first taste of zero-G ship handling. Here, officer cadets climb out above the part terraformed Titan moon on a familiarisation hop.

Another bit of slightly retro sci-fi, featuring the girl from the Orca pics, somewhat earlier in her career.

Apparently her last name is now Venturi, haven't settled on a first yet.

I'll admit: I'm really enjoying doing these space scenes, though some more practice drawing planets from above may be in order... and yes, the OI-104 is basically a Starfighter with bits on.

Oh, and the soundtrack for this was ---> www.youtube.com/watch?v=gla6FV…

Seriously, how was that show not a seminal part of my childhood?

But the most important question: Does it eject up or down?

See there is a blast wire in the canopy, but never hurts to be sure.

I like to think that, by this stage of human development, we've managed to work out an ejection seat that goes up fast enough to clear the tail.

Or the cockpit encloses and drops out the bottom?

She's in a space suit, she'll be able to punch out over the top.

Hope the ejection rocket is good enough to clear the tail.

When you get into something labelled 104, tradition tells which handle to look for first -.o

Some splendid work to be certain. If you have not already, would you consider submitting this to Space-Revived ? Think it would be a most welcome addition.

Indeed.

Oh I think I could try that out, shall wander over and join up.

God dammit, I just spent like 15 minutes drooling over the cockpit details. Β The planet scape is also rad, I like how you've got a bit of the dark side on the horizon.Β

Haha, cheers mate.

Actually, I was kind of worried the cockpit was a little detail-spare.

As to the planets: the twilight line mostly came about because I needed to mimic the lighting direction I wanted for the cockpit. That, and the planets looked really odd fully lit, like they didn't quite fit into the picture, so a bit of darkness got added.

Everything's better on the dark-side. I hear they have cookies.

Cheers again.

Yeah, I do like adding a few details here and there... though they are admittedly sometimes lost to time constraints

Great job, as always.

And The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers was a seminal part of my late teens. One of the best days of my life was the AGR panel at San Diego Comic Con when they announced the show was going to be released on iTunes and DVD.

Yeah, I'm slowly watching my way through it now, and it is as amazing as the intro promised it to be

Awesome work and background story! Β The OI-104 will probably be a cadet trainer for another 2 or 3 centuries, just seems like a fitting wind down for an old soldier.

Hmm, Cadet Venturi seems like "Katarina" would be an excellent first name.

On a personal note, sorry for the long absence, I have got to get caught up with your work (and a lot of other peoples, too).

wraith11 In reply to nomyai [2014-03-10 05:18:15 +0000 UTC]

Cheers mate. I think the 104 will be around for awhile yet, not least because I just happen to like the idea of things being reused or repurposed, I think it gives a universe more depth than everything being shiny and new/only used as it was intended. Besides, just because gear is old doesn't stop it being good gear.

I shall add "Katarina" to my list of name possbilities, which also include "Claire" through "Nova"... depending on how purposely sci-fi-camp I feel like making this particular universe

Heh, no apologies required. Life has this habit of getting in the way at times... besides, I'm the last person who could rightfully make comment on keeping abrest of others' work.

Reality is merely the springboard where sci-fi adventure is concerned.
