A scene from "Threads of Fate", the fourth story in my Avatar: The Last Airbender fan-fiction series found at [link]
Excerpt from "Thread of Fate"
(chapter 7 - Threads)
The Shadows hovered hungrily over Zuko’s prone body, gleefully relishing the pain and anguish they had caused, and savoring their victory. But their triumph was short-lived as a far more powerful spirit entered the grove. The wraiths cringed against the onslaught of brilliance that emanated from it, before shrieking in terror as they fled the scene.
Delicate cloven hooves stepped lightly toward the fallen prince, the flickering flames that ringed them leaving not so much as a withering on the faded grass. Zuko stirred with a groan as warmth and life returned to his limbs, and slowly, painfully, he pushed himself up to a kneeling position and looked at his rescuer. His good eye flew wide as he gasped, frozen in awe at the creature that stood before him

Wow, the kirin(I think that is what it actually called but not completly sure) looks really well done. I love the glow that it has. Really well done.
The cranes in the background are very pretty to look at as well. Love the art as well as the stories!

WOW! This is great. I had a hard time trying to image what 'The Herald' looked like when I was reading the story, but now I know exactly what to picture in my head the next time I read this chapter.

Oo, the luminescence of the spirit is really cool. The texturing of the edges of the bushes is neat too.
The cranes in the background are a nice touch too, do they have any significance to the rest of the scene?

"do (the cranes) have any significance to the rest of the scene?"
Hrm, i'm not really sure how to answer that without giving away anything. So i'll just say 'yes', they are very significant; not so much to this particular moment in the 'episode', but to the overall series of stories.
They foreshadow something...

Up close, it's even easier to see how ethereal and weightless the ch'i-lin looks. You struck a good balance between strength and grace. And the lighting effects for the mane and other hair tufts are just magnificent.

Thanks! I came to two very important realizations while working on this piece:
1. There is no fast, easy way to create believable, multi-hued scales.
and
2. Photoshop layer effects are a GODSEND! The 'ethereal' lighting would have taken me forever the old fashioned way (and i spent enough time just on the scales!)
But you are definitely worth every minute, and i've actually been wanting to do this scene for a long (loooooong) time. In fact, i'm pretty sure i still have the initial rough i did last year around here somewhere....*starts shuffling through old sketchbooks*

"But you are definitely worth every minute,"
Dude*...that's one of the sweetest things anyone's ever said to me.
