I have to agree with ; I don't mind when some of the fans say "I think she's lesbian", it's when they say "whatever dude - you're just the 2% of fandom who doesn't understand that she's lesbian" that bugs me. I mean, okay, fanfics are okay (although I saw tons of good series get ruined because of it - ST, X-Uni. and so on), but the fact that they insist that she's lesbian is what bugs me.
Personally, she's my favourite character and the "fact" that she's a TOMBOY ads much to it - if she'd be a lesbian, she would be a "meh" [link] character for me because it would be too stereotypical. For a joke, it's okay (I joke with it sometimes), but otherwise it would just ruin the magic for me.

i totally see your point. when i first saw a picture shipping Dash and Pinkie, i was enraged. seriously, people? do you have that little of a brain? just because she has a rainbow mane and tail, and she's a bit of a tomboy, does NOT make her a lesbian. people who ship ApplexDash, PinkiexDash, or Dash with any other female pony makes me really mad. i faved this.

All girl cast, Dash's the most popular pony. I don't think it's because of her rainbows and tomboyness(is that a word? no.), she just has the most fans, where all but one of the mane cast are girls and the exception is a baby dragon. That's why I usually ship the mane cast: because they have te most interaction. Only exception really is Twilight/Whooves, and that's because it's the Doctor, screentime or not he gets tail.

Actually, Lauren Faust doesn't care what a brony sees them as sexuality wise, although she also said Dash isn't necessarily a lesbian.

You made your point fairly respectfully, which I appreciate.
However (and hopefully equally respectfully): In the year 2011, it is not unreasonable to think that a fictional character who was deliberately given both lesbian-associated characteristics and lesbian-associated symbols (butchness and rainbows) was given that combination for a reason.
Of course tomboys don't have to be gay, but RD isn't a real person; she's a character who was deliberately designed by people who know that little gay kids watch TV too, and want to let those gay kids think of her as a gay role model if they want to.
RD will never get a girlfriend on the show, of course, but I for one would find it very disappointing if they pointlessly give her a male love interest just to make the point that she's straight.
Last point: Straight is a sexuality too. Either you assume she's totally asexual, or you're projecting sexuality onto cartoon characters, just like the people who think she's gay are.

Rainbow Dash was not Lauren's creation. Rainbow Dash is a G3 pony who was originally a very feminine fashionista. The coloration and rainbow mane are carry overs from her and since she was featured prominently in the G3 animation and final lines and sold well - it's no surprise she was carried over. Little girls love rainbow colored things - there were even several lines of Rainbow Ponies in G1.
The "butch" personality and lightning bolts come from the G1 Firefly whom was the pony Lauren originally drew. Firefly was bold, daring, in your face and sporty. In fact, the original ponies Lauren drew were Surprise, Posey, Applejack, Firefly and Sparkler. That's why Pinkie Pie originally had wings. So the G4 Dash has Firefly's personality. I seriously doubt Lauren and Hasbro sat there and went "Now how can I make the most insulting stereotypical gay character ever? Oh I know, I'll play into the "butch" stereotype and add rainbows."

If you're so determined that she's not gay, then do you believe her to be straight or do you think of her as asexual?
And why aren't KIDS allowed to have gay role models, even if they only believe the character to be gay without it ever being confirmed? With all the hate gays face from so many sources, innocent little children kill themselves. Showing a character who may or may not be gay in a positive light is NEVER a bad thing for scared kids trying to figure themselves out.

Oh, and one more thing (sorry): Faust's response was not to DENY that RD is gay, but to explicitly say that her sexuality is an open question (and she implied it's one that will never be answered on the show itself). What goes against her comment(and the spirit of the show) is to INSIST that she's either gay OR straight.

It's a kid's cartoon, and because of the dislike of gays still in the US, I doubt ANY of the ponies are either gay or lesbian.

Now, I don't know many gay people, but once my family went to a church and two guys were sitting in front of us, and afterwards I overheard my mom saying that they were gay. And I had no idea! Not all lesbians are tomboys and not all gay men act, for lack of a better word, prissy. They act like normal people!
