I've tried masking before, using some fluid we had hanging around. What i'd like to know is how to avoid peeling the paper off with it! I found that more often than not, the dried fluid peeled off a layer of paper and left horrible little tears and soft spots. Is that normal or is there a technique to avoid that?

It might just be that the fluid you were using was just too old. Removing it should do no damage to the paper whatsoever. Masking fluid (frisket) is a little more difficult to remove than rubber cement. If you use masking fluid in the future, make sure to remove it with a stiff plastic eraser. It also could be that you were simply laying it on too thick. Masking fluid is basically thin glue, so keep that in mind while you use it

Ooooh, I see. Thank you very much, that was very helpful advice! Me thinks I'll get some rubber cement for my future watercolouring endeavours.
