Thanks! When I first started making masks I became a tad obsessive about creating a porcelain-like super polished smooth finish. I had seen photos of Venetian masks and they all looked so perfect and flawless, so this is what I strived for. I obsessed over every last brush mark. Years later, when I finally got to Venice and saw the masks in the flesh, as it were, what did I find? They weren't flawless at all, they had brush strokes, finger prints, pitted gesso, runs, lumps and bumps - you name it, it was all there. Lesson learned - photographs don't show every detail, and no mask was ever meant to be scrutinised so close up. Most are seen from a distance. Even the Venetian masters are only human.Β
These days I'm not quite so obsessive about the perfect finish, but I am pleased with the smoothness of this one. Having said that, I think I might start exploring texture rather a lot more than I have previously, I've seen some fantastic textured effects and now I want to have a go as well.Β

I recall seeing the masks in venice- though not as many as I would have liked. Β I guess I didn't see them up close enough to notice flaws. Β At least it made you strive for a flawless quality- which comes across readily in your pieces. Β I would love to see the textured effects that you use.
