Description
This was a real labour of love. Based on the Death Eater masks from Harry Potter, and made for the last book release. It was worn to the book-queue at Piccadilly, London, by who looked rather stunning as Narcissa. It's papier-mache, and all those tiny scrollwork spirals were pressed into the surface with a pin. (!) It took my right hand about four days to stop cramping up.
I was very pleased with the antique metallic effect.

Nice, it looks great!
What materials did you make this with?
I wanted to make 2 masks similar to this one, but wasn't sure how to go about it.

Did Narcissa wear a mask in the movies? I don't remember ever seeing her wear one. Am I just forgetting the scene she wore it in, or is this an original design?

Thank you!
First I make a clay sculpt, then I take a cast in plaster of paris, and I apply papier-mache into that mould. You can see in my 'scraps' folder a little of the processes behind my papier mache work. I use exactly the same mask-making techniques as the Venetians.

yeah I did! You have an amazing gallery AND scraps folder!
How does a person wear a mask like that? Does it have like an elastic or something? Sorry I've never seen an actual one :$ and how do you sculpt the clay so that it contours to a person's face? I tried making a mask for my brother a while back, can't say he was too pleased with having to sit still for two hours with wet tissues plastered to his face *wince*
That should give you an idea for how my attempt turned out

I'm not a huge fan of papier-mache, but your work with it (especially this piece) has me rethinking the medium. Absolutely stunning work.

I know what you mean. I think a lot of people tend to recall the lumpy attempts at papier-mache that they did as a child. I know I certainly had my doubts about it when I first started experimenting with it.
It's a surprisingly strong and durable medium, though, and shouldn't be underestimated. It can be sanded when dry, and all sorts of fantastic finishes can be applied. The Victorians even used to make furniture out of it!
Thank you.
