Description Wow, finally a clay tutorial! The first thing that was on my to-do list that I've actually completed. @__@ I know you guys have been asking for a tutorial for a while, so now you may know the secrets to how I make clay figurines, haha.

Why a llama? Well when I made my ones I realised that they were quite simple to make, and since a few of you guys (my watchers) had asked for a tutorial, I figured that a llama was a good way to go, easy and very deviantart-y.

Why foil? It makes your figurine lighter, faster to bake and you use less clay.

Clarification: To soften clay you can work it with your fingers, like massage it etc.

Remember, the tutorial goes from left to right, not down. n_n;
I hope you guys find this useful! It really could be used to any animal. This is the technique I use for ALL of my clay creations, so yeah, just adapt it to your needs.

Other Tutorials (including how to make a cape for your llama):

Here are some of my deviations showing them completed!

Can't wait to see your llamas! Please show me what you do! If you do give me a link, I'll post it here so others can admire your llamas too!

is this safe to bake? (i know, im blonde and clueless... you can laugh at me)

yingmakes In reply to marinebiology [2012-07-26 22:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, that's ok!

Yeah, polymer clay is completely bakeable! However you have to be careful with your times and temperature, otherwise it can burn. But the only way to make polymer clay hard is to bake it.

Do you have a tutorial for the glassses and the bow tie?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yingmakes In reply to SammyCatBone [2012-06-16 00:09:10 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately not, but all you need to do is make the shapes of the sunglasses and bow tie out of clay and stick em on.

They are so cute! X3
How do you manage to smooth two pieces together?
I tried and I ended up messing up one of the pieces in the process of hiding the seam.

yingmakes In reply to sisterweird [2012-03-19 05:45:34 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thanks!

Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean! Tho if you're having trouble you could use an instrument to help smooth out the seams?

sisterweird In reply to yingmakes [2012-03-19 19:53:44 +0000 UTC]

Like right where the ears attach to the head. you cant tell that they are actually seperate pieces. hmn..

yingmakes In reply to sisterweird [2012-03-21 21:34:54 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, is your clay too hard?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sisterweird In reply to yingmakes [2012-03-21 23:29:56 +0000 UTC]

I think its too soft...
I bought Crayola air dry clay since it was cheap and im only a beginner.
I try and blend the pieces together, and i end up smushing everything else and losing the shape i wanted x.x

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yingmakes In reply to sisterweird [2012-03-22 00:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, yeah! The air dry clay stuff is very soft, I also found ti really hard to blend stuff with the air dry clay, some of my earliest deviations were made from air dry clay. x__x

Personally I think you should get Fimo/Sculpey stuff, or polymer clay, or even plasticine, since air dry stuff is so different from the polymer stuff.

sisterweird In reply to yingmakes [2012-03-22 20:03:42 +0000 UTC]

I will deffinately look into them
I might have to wait to buy them though because I dont think my dad will let me use his oven haha!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yingmakes In reply to sisterweird [2012-03-22 20:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, true! Lucky for me I use a toaster oven... maybe you could use no bake clay? Like Das..

That stuff feels more clay-like than polymer clay, but it air dries to be really hard.
