Don't worry about that XD I love comments!

And yes, I do go to BYU-I and I love it! The only thing I don't like is the credit cap, because then I can't take all of the classes I want to.

Yay!

Oh man, that is so cool! I plan on coming in February next year! I heard something about a credit cap. To prevent people from staying at the school forever, right? Because I would probably be one of those people. I love learning.
I think you are taking the same major I'll be going into as well. If you're still there in February, you never know, we may meet!
Do you do any of the extra-curricular stuff? I want to try fencing, archery, dodgeball, and battleship!
I think my mom is going insane with how excited I am LOL!

Yokoboo In reply to Wheatart [2010-03-11 02:20:31 +0000 UTC]

In February? Doesn't the semester start in Janurary?

What major are you going into? As of right now, I'm in the Integrated Studio 2D Design.

I will probably be here, yes, I live here year round because I love my apartment.

This semester I'm taking Horsemanship I and two dance classes. So yes, I do do the extra stuff. I'm sure you'll have room in your schedule if you plan it right.

Wheatart In reply to Yokoboo [2010-03-11 04:30:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think winter semester starts in February, but I could be wrong.
I want to major in Illustration, though I don't know if it gets more specific. It might.

Year round? Cool! Though, I'm guessing you are probably not on campus then.

Horsemanship? Dang, that sounds cool! I personally can't wait to go to the dances. I've been told the schedule doesn't take up as much time as high school, but I bet the homework makes up for that.
So, just curious, are you a member?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yokoboo In reply to Wheatart [2010-03-11 06:18:01 +0000 UTC]

No, winter semester starts in Janurary. Generally right after New Years.

So you want a BFA (Bachelors of Fine Arts) with an emphasis in Illustration. I used to be focusing on that major, only you're not allowed a minor, and there's not much room in your credit cap for extra classes. Granted, you can take extra classes, and the reason they do that is as a favor for the students, but it's still a bummer.

No, I don't live on campus, never have. Apartments are less expensive.

Your schedule is what you want it to be, so you can either do a heavy one or a light one. As a percaution to a fellow art major, don't take more than 15 credits a semester or you will die. Quite seriously, art majors are not meant to finish college in 4 years, so don't try or you'll burn out. All the teachers are really great, and as long as you remember that they only give you advice so you can improve, you'll do fine.

And depending on the teacher, your homework varies. Check out ratemyprofessor.com for your classes if you're not sure.

And yes, I am a member, have been all my life, in fact.

Wheatart In reply to Yokoboo [2010-03-11 06:28:09 +0000 UTC]

Ah okay. I better go superspeed then!
Yeah, that's right.
Oh you can't minor in that one? Really? I didn't actually know that. I have a friend who is majoring in Biology and Minoring in Art. I have another friend who I think considered switching her illustration major. What do you mean by extra classes as a favour?
Hmmmm... I guess it's good for me to gather all this information before I actually get there so I can be somewhat prepared. Though, I do think on campus for my first year might be a good idea. I'm Canadian, so I have to fill out an affidavit of support as well, which is kind of a bummer, but at least I'll have funds in order before I get there.

I was told 15 or less was a good idea, so I will take that into account! How many years are they actually supposed to finish in?
I'm totally excited to get critiques from teachers! My mom has been amply preparing me for that.
ratemyprofessor.com? That's kind of funny and awesome at the same time!
Sweet! Me too! Got out of the youth program late last year, so let's see what entering the real world does!

Yokoboo In reply to Wheatart [2010-03-11 07:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry, I meant they don't let you take a minor with an Illustration major as a favor to the students, because the workload in the major is HUGE. But, you can take extra classes like archery and such. Here at BYUI there's a thing called clusters, which bascially means it's not a full minor, but you def take more than just one class.

Oh cool, my FHE brother is canadian XD

As for how many years... Right now I'm on my third year (credit-wise still a sophmore), and I still have... 8 general ed classes, 4 Creative Writing classes (for my cluster), 5 dance classes, 23 art classes left to take. So... I could see myself here for another 2-3 years(5-6 total).

Wheatart In reply to Yokoboo [2010-03-11 14:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh okay! That's kind of cool! Yay! I might do clusters then.
Canada! Whooooo!
Wow, that's a lot of classes, but it sounds like so much fun! University is any awesome in high school concentrated and multiplied!
Have you had to consider what you're doing for Internship or travel abroad yet? I don't know if those are the only options, but I think that's the big project. I wish I could intern at Disney!
So, have you rated professors on that one website? I was checking out all the art professors, and the biggest issue seemed to be they were either too lax, or pushed you to the max. I am still totally stoked!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yokoboo In reply to Wheatart [2010-03-11 16:23:54 +0000 UTC]

I'll probably try to get an internship with an illustrator. There's no animation major, so I would think getting an internship with Disney or Pixar would be hard. But if that's what you want to do, get to know Bro. Huntsman, he's worked for them (he does backgrounds and enviornments, if you've seen Road to Eldorado, he's done some of those backgrounds). Personally, I'd love to intern under Pixar and if I knew Japanese, I would try and get an internship with Studio Ghibli :3 But I'll probably just do it with a freelance artist.

I haven't rated anyone on that website, but I can give you my brief synopsis of what I think about them.

Bro. Clare: really funny guy, his classes are really fun and he's a really good teacher.

Bro. Nolan Parson: Leon Parson's brother, he actually works in the Interior Design department, but he'll occasionally teach an art class for art majors. Don't relinquish your seat to him unless you want him to finish your picture XD

Sis. Grover: Lots of lab work in her Color and Design class. She's good for bouncing ideas off of, but if you know a lot about Color and Design already a lot of the stuff in the class may seem redundant. Not a lot of actual art projects in her class.

Bro. Bodily: Adorable old man. He likes manga. He does have a quiet, thrumming voice, so make sure you're not already tired when you go to his class XD I actually had him for a Humanities class, but he teaches Oil Painting and Art History and a couple other classes.

Bro. Bates: Really good at describing and explaining the purpose of techniques such as the proper use of thick and thin lines. He gives really good feedback on your work. But he gets distracted and will go on tangents quite easily. Be prepared to hear stories from him two or three times.

Bro. Leon Parson: Once upon a time was Department head. He will give it to you straight and expects your best from you. Don't take a class from him unless you're going to be 120% dedicated to the class and the assignments.

Bro. Carter: Great teacher, he gives great feedback and note-taking in his class is highly advised as he gives great advice. He is not a fan of Photoshop, so in his classes I advise being prepared to do a lot of traditional work.

Sis. Ellis: A nice lady, haven't taken a class from her yet, but she does great watercolor work.

Bro. Call: He is SO GOOD with charcoal, I can't wait to take a class with him.

Annnnd... that's about all I know about the teachers. I know Bro. Call and Sis. Ellis because they were both in the Drawing II class I was in before I dropped it.
So I got to see a bit of their work and talk to them.

Wheatart In reply to Yokoboo [2010-03-12 00:35:13 +0000 UTC]

I had a response. And then it was deleted.
But anyways, I'm really hoping to go towards concept art, comics, books, games, and the like, so illustration might still work. But when I get there, I can't wait to meet all these professors! I bet I would probably walk up to Bro. Huntsman and stand there like an idiot or something. I haven't brushed shoulders with fame much. I heard there are actually quite a few well known art professors there. I heard one worked on Spiderman 3!
Freelance artists offer internships?
Studio Ghibli would be another cool one! The other movie studio that has snagged my interest is Walden Media. They did Narnia and Terebithia, so right up alley there!
That's fascinating to see your opinion of the professors. I take it you've had Bro. Parson finish a picture you were doing before? Oh boy, two Parsons!

The only thing I am worried about is falling asleep because I've done that at EFY classes before. Not intentional, but that week is basically an adrenaline rush, and those classes seem really warm.

Thanks for taking so much time to talk to me! I really appreciate it, and I can't WAIT to get there. I have been on a BYU high since October or earlier last year. I'm surprised I haven't driven everyone crazy with my repetitive mentionings of the subject. I'm sure I'll drive my grandma crazy when we drive down there in the summer.

Oh, I know you did =Cheeko-001 's contest with a dragonsona. Do you want to join our group? It's based off of her contest!

Yokoboo In reply to Wheatart [2010-03-12 02:40:19 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm... one word of warning about concept art, everyone and their mother right now wants to do concept art, so if that's the field you want to go into, you need to be really really good at it, because there's some tough competition out there. It's one of the reasons I'm kinda mad we don't have an animation department, because having those skills would only be an asset to the students and they won't/can't provide it. Personally, I'd love to study and find out about the programs myself and then teach it here at the college. But I'd have to graduate and then take extra classes at another school...

The Parsons are actually a family. Their father was an art professor, the youngest brother Dell works for the church. He does Ensign artwork and stuff. Leon paints lanscapes, he's done a couple famous paintings, and he did some of the murals in the temples. And I'm not sure what Nolan has done.

Yeah, there are a few of the professors who have done some really amazing stuff.

I'm sure as long as you get enough sleep you'll do fine :3

And you don't need to thank me, I'm happy to provide any information I can :3

Hmmmmm... I think I shall have to decline from joining the group. I am an avid ninja supporter. Always liked the idea of farmers becoming skilled at fighting to protect their land from samurai over a bunch of paranoid, back-stabbing, salty sea-dogs.

Wheatart In reply to Yokoboo [2010-03-12 03:14:51 +0000 UTC]

I wonder why it's so popular? Animation would definitely be an advantageous program, but I thought they had it. When I was on the BYU site, they were showing sneak peaks into the BYU shorts being made. I was so mad too, because I couldn't see the whole thing! Here's the animation link thingie [link]
I would like to go into animation, but I just don't know how good I would be is all. Foley (sound) would be another fun department, I'm not gonna lie.
You should be a professor of animation. That would be fun!
WOoooow, that would be an interesting family to be in!
Here's to hoping! I'm probably gonna be so pumped the first week it'll be just like EFY!
If I do get to be a bother, feel free to tell me when to shut up. If I ended up being a professor, I would probably be one that was stuck on one subject or go off on random monologues.
Well.... we do have one ninja dragon in there. Cheeko is our ninja spy as while. It's only the ninja-gryphons that are the real problem!
And, touche. You definitely have a point there!

Yes, Provo has it, but Rexburg doesn't have an animation program or any animation classes.

Hmmmmm.... Well, I think it will be alright. And like my friend says, "Ninjas and Pirates agree: Cowboys suck." So I think I just might join your crew :3

Wheatart In reply to Yokoboo [2010-03-12 14:08:25 +0000 UTC]

Ahh. Maybe future animation students can transfer? One of the missionaries in our ward kept trying to convince me to get over to Provo instead of Utah. He is going there right after his mission.
Whee! That's an interesting attitude. I'm personally open to whichever, but that's just me.
And yay! I'm excited now!
Mostly, the group is to showcase our collaborative efforts for one idea, so there's not a lot posted, but it's easy to find anything we've done!

You mean under my eyes? I have huge permanent dark circles. Usually when I personify myself in my aside/extra comics, it's as as raccoon- because of those circles. So I grew attached to them over the years and decided to keep them.

Yokoboo In reply to HikaruFER [2009-07-04 03:20:32 +0000 UTC]

lol, it's not a problem at all XD

Actually I have tried a cream, which does help alleviate the puffiness when I remember to use it. But I'm just so lazy I don't keep up the daily routine. Also, the circles are not that dark. I tend to exaggerate them when I personify myself. But they're definitely there. And I don't mind them, they define me, the same way my mole on my left side of my mouth does.
