Description Just barely meeting the deadline I set for myself, here is a concept of the assault rifle that I will be taking all the way to importing as a 3D model in Unreal Engine 3 next week.

One of the things I was striving for with this design was making it seem really heavy and chunky, with a minimum of useless details. I wanted it to seem intimidating without looking silly and impractical. What do you think? What parts of the design could stand improvement?

I'll have an image up soon showing the process by which I arrived at this design, but suffice it to say for now that this final concept is a paintover of a rough 3D model.

Photoshop and 3DS MAX.

I like the simple industrial heavy design. I do agree a larger round size would be fitting. Something stands out that I do think is cool. The round bulge. It draws your eyes to it.

Well over all it is a rock solid design and could prove useful for an assault rifle in just about anything rocking UE3. However you said you wanted it to seem initimidating, and I find you could up that fact without losing practicality by modifying two things that go hand in hand. Both the magazine and barrel are kind of thin compared to the front end of the gun, giving it the look of something between 5.56 ammo or a hybrid varient like the round a P90 fires. While standard, if you want intimidation, you might be able to do a slight adjustment to both to allow for a bigger round usage without compromising too much of the overall look of the gun. And unless this were to wind up in a game like the Fallout series, it would be tough for it to be wired down to a specific or realistic caliber, so it could just be labeled as "Assault" without you having to figure out actual dimensions and practicality. Getting kind of deep, and more into the implimention side of it for in game reasons, and again, over all this is a rock solid gun, looks like it could take quite the beating, just needs to be able to dish out a good beating as well without expending half the clip or so.

from a design point of view, the cocking mechanism should have a bit more room , rather than be stuck right behind that circular bulge But that's just my thought from a real-application standpoint, though mind you ,I've never held a rifle in my life, so I could be completely wrong very nice image though Certainly a rail mechanism of some sort for extra equipment wouldn't be too much either great picture

Yeah, I think you're right. The cocking mechanism looks difficult to use at the moment, pinched up against the cylindrical shape. To be honest I just kind of like the way that it looked to have the cocking mechanism smack into the cylindrical shape, it felt like it was emphasizing industrial design over conventional aesthetics. But the impracticality of the result kind of contradicts that. I'll see what I can do to come up with something that makes more sense when I get to working on the 3D model tomorrow.

Thanks for the helpful input!

oh no, not aesthetics, it looks awesome the way it is It's just that ergonomics developed straight out of military design 'course it doesn't matter in a game, but as far as design is concerned, ergonomics is an integral part so I wanted to give my input ^^

you're welcome ^^ hehe

Naybe a dual clip. Seems serious enough that having a second clip right there would make sense? Or.. some kind of grenade launcher. Looks good

I don't think I've seen a rifle with a dual clip before. Is it just there for easy access to pop in next, or does it actually feed into position automatically? Do you have any references I could see? Yeah, I'm thinking about adding a grenade launcher into the front grip since it's kind of inexplicably bulky at the moment. Thanks Dave!

Well the way I've seen them they took two magazines and taped them together with one inserted and the other inverted so when the first is empty they just flip it, but i guess you could just put a doublesized magazine in the first place...60 rounds instead of 30

here's an example of one [link]

Oh funky! Thanks for explanation and the reference. I'll try it out while I work on the high-poly 3D model.
