History:
Midway class was designed by the same team that designed Akira class, early during its design progress it was to be modiified and elarged Akira however it evolved into brand new ship. While Starfleet Command didn't originally want to build this ship as Akira was quite successful, her design team manage to convince Admiral Murdock that Midway working with Akira may be a deadly combination in combat especially if Borg attack again. Ironically USS Midway won't be launched in time to participate in Battle of Sector 001 but it will see quite a combat during Dominion war, altough by the end of the war only small number of ships would be built.
Midway was in short heavier variant of Akira class. It was more resilient and more powerful then Akira but was pretty much all. Admiral Murdock wished to created small battlegroups which will have one Midway, two Akira's and one Intrepid. With Intrepid acting as heavily armed scout, remaining three ships to be heavy hitters. This was tested during Dominion war and result was pure success.
But what makes Midway different from Akira, except been larger and better.
Midway's armament is similar to that of Akira however instead of four Type X phaser arrays that Akira carry, Midway have four Type XII phaser arrays, originally Midway was to carry same Type X phasers as Akira but this was changed during construction of USS Midway. In term of torpedoes, Akira class was notorious for numbers of torpedo tubes and torpedoes they can carry making them one of most powerful ships as they could spit dozens torpedos in seconds on opponent. While standard number of torpedo tubes was twelve, some members had fifteen. Akira could carry up to two thousand photon torpedoes on board although this was reduced in numbers once quantum torpedoes were added. Midway carry twelve pulse fire torpedo tubes, the same one as used on Akira but Midway came with both Photon and Quantum torpedoes and design team claim that Midway can carry up to four thousand torpedoes on board, although they never did as most of torpedoes they carry was around two thousand but that was still impressive.
While first Akira class ships had 5.4cm of High desnity armor which was later improved to 7cm and 2.2cm of ablative armor, Midway came with 5.4cm of ablative armor and her overal construction was such that she was more resilient then her older sister. Shield system was the same auto modulating high capacity-regenerative shield system that Akira used however this shield system on board Midway was more resilient and capable thanks to additional shield generators on board which boost more power into shields.
Midway was also capable of carrying more support crafts, up to forty eight fighters, twelve shuttles and two to three runabouts which allows her to be used as a carrier as well. However during Dominion war they were rarely used in that role. During Dominion war they would often be used as command ships for smaller battlegroups, Admiral Murdock would be able to test this battlegroups during the war as mentined before it will be total success. During one battle, two Midway class ships and four Akiras class attack much larger Dominion force. Using tight formation for better defense all six ships would unleash massive volley of torpedoes toward Dominion positions, almost eighty percent of enemy ships were either destroyed or crippled during the only one volley showing Starfleet how deadly combination of Akira and Midway class can be, it also show this to Dominion who will later try to focus on this ships whenver they engage Starfleet forces, sometimes with some success (against Akira's) but mostly without real success.
Akira would remain in its role of a heavy cruiser and carrier while Midways would be used either as command cruisers for smaller attack groups, or simply as an attack cruiser where it would engage enemy at short to mid range and blast it with its massive torpedo volleys but it will also be used as artillery cruiser during the later part of war where this ships could launch heavy torpedo barrage from safe range on attacking enemy which results in total destruction of attacking force. Comparing to Akira class, Midway's were not often used in big fleet engagements as there were to few of them, they were mostly used in small battlegroups or in solo independent attacks.
If Akira class have a hero member (USS Atlantis) which was well known during the war, Midway class also had one member. Second ship in the class, USS Hiryu will prove herself quite well, ship would saw heavy combat during the war, both larger fleet engagements hit and run attacks. While USS Midway would be deployed to the 4th fleet and won't see much of war (with exception of battling Breen in 2375) Hiryu would see far more. One of the early battle she had was during the later part of Battle of Tyra where she and her two older Akira class sisters Atlantis and Valkyrie would engage Dominion forces to give surviving ships of 7th fleet chance of escape. Comparing to the earlier state that Midway class often was used as command ship and lead the Akiras into battle, in this case it was other way around, USS Atlantis was command ship while Hiryu and Valkyrie were escorts. This didn't bother Andorian Captain Tran at all, after all he knew very well Captain Arnheim of USS Atlantis and knowing his tactical capabilities it was logical that Atlantis would be command ship. Ironically three ships were not really part of battlegroup but it was Captain Arnheim that contact two other nearby ships to help saving the 7th fleet, which both captains agree to do.
Three ships enter Tyra system and immediatley engage Dominion forces, firepower from two Akira class and a Midway tore trough the Dominion lines with such speed that Dominion forces were unable to react at first. This gave more then enough time for three ships to reach rear of the escaping ships, saving USS Lexington and warp out after the rest of 7th fleet survivors already warped. Later Atlantis, Hiryu and Valkyrie would once again enter Tyra with guns blazing to allow another three Starfleet ships to conduct SAR operation. After this Starfleet used more and more combination of Akira and Midway class ships with great effect, even to lure larger Dominion forces into traps. Comparing to Akira class not a single Midway class ship was lost during the Dominion war, damaged yes but none was crippled or destroyed, this proved to Starfleet that Midway was quite a successful ship.
On top of its impressive combat capabilities, Midway also have quite good exploration capabilities as well. However from one hundred and forty ships originally only sixty two were to be built. Starfleet believed that despite Akira class suffer losses during the war, they perform well and they were cheaper to build then Midway. This was true, Akira was cheaper and it take less time to be built then Midway class, as such Starfleet believed that sixty two ships were more then enough and that production would be heavily shifted to Akira instead. Last ship of Midway class was completed and enter service in 2384, production of Akira class contiue with 10 ships per year. Despite no longer in production Midway class was to remain in service well into 25th century, Starfleet believed that both Akira and Midway classes may remain in service till beginning of 2450's even 2460s when they are to be retired.
