History:

Steamrunner is one of unusual designs that enter Starfleet service in last year of Cardassian-Federation war. It was plagued by many technical problems, and was almost cancelled if not for admiral Burke and his engineering team who find and fix most of the problems, originally ship was to be built by the 2358, however due problems it was delayed and was launched in 2360, it would took two years before finally entering the service. In the last year of war, Steamrunner did proved that it was sturdy design, and often served as scout - light cruiser or as heavier Torpedo cruiser, paired with two or three Saber and Norway class ships. This tactic was often show great sucess as Cardassian destroyer and cruiser wings would be broken with relative ease.

Steamrunner because of its design has to have additional protection for its crew. Additional heavy bulkheads to protect from radiation, since buzzard collectors were in the main hull, not on the pylons as most of other designs. Ship do not have secondary hull which made things tricky if warp core overloads and if core could not be removed. This were the main problems and weaknesses of this ship however they were fixed with.

Unlike other ships at the time, Steamrunner was not really a exploration ship, it was combat ship one of first (together with Saber, Akira and Defiant), but due its size it has some exploration capabilities. Steamrunner was deployed mostly on borders as fast patrol cruiser, although it was also called heavy frigate by some. Class didn't face Borg at Wolf 359, however it did face it few years later at the battle of 001. There were about twelve to sixteen Steamrunners assigned to Typhoon fleet, fleet that engage in running battle with the Borg all the way to the Earth, class recieved heavy casulties as over seven or eight ships were lost during the battle, with two ships USS Appalachia and USS Hiroshima join in last part of the battle and help destroying the borg cube.

During the war with Dominion, Steamrunner was usually deployed as scout cruiser, and usually in pairs which allows it necessary strenght in facing Dominion battlecruisers. With heavy upgrade of its tactical systems (stronger weapons, introduction of Quantum torpedoes and rapid fire turret, new warp core and new shields), Steamrunner was capable to attack and defeat type III or even command variant type IV Galor without problems. It could face any ship that Dominion had, with exception of Hutets and Dominion battleships and dreadnoughts.

Although it do well during the war, class lost many of its members, over eighty were lost during the war and battle of sector 001. Production was twelve ships per year, twenty during the war time so it is not suprised that there is over one two hundred in service. Steamrunner is definitly a candidate to replace Miranda class ships.
