Description Youtube video : [link]

Note that this tutorial expects you to have atleast basic knowledge of the program

Also note that I do use a tablet, the same look won't be achieved with a mouse

Oh another good reason to have a big canvas is it's easier to fill in your base colors afterwards, you can just paint bucket it =7=

I had a few people ask how I lineart and well..I'm not really sure how to explain/teach it besides telling you my settings and I guess my canvas size and what not to do hahaha. So here's how I basically lineart, not how you should lineart but how I lineart..ahaha

Hope whoever finds it useful, feel free to ask questions because this is full of holes and mistakes somewhere I'm sure :'D

You need pen pressure to make smoother lines, you can go to places that sell computers and they usually range from 40-400$!

In the description I said getting the lines like that will have to take some work, it's just like painting pretty much, you won't get the thin line at the end without lifting the brush if that makes sense!

This looks really nice, and this is very helpful! I just started using SAI, and i'm still getting used to the whole feel of things, but the stabilizer doesn't work for me. The lines don't fan out on the ends, it's just one bulky gross looking line. I've tried every size too, but it doesn't work. Any ideas as to why?

zearyu In reply to whitetigerclaws [2013-06-30 23:56:33 +0000 UTC]

if it looks very blocky then your computer may not be detecting the pressure sensitivity of your tablet ;7; if it's not that well it doesn't actually become a point on its own, you have to still put enough pressure so it can do that xD like using a real paint brush if that makes sense!

I have a question- I answered it once like...decade's ago. XD How do you get like...a crystal clear image? So it doesn't look fuzzy and whatnot after or before you color (zoom in or zoom out)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to Irma-C [2013-06-15 15:21:46 +0000 UTC]

Umm I don't think I ever got a blurry image before or after I color xD zooming in will become blurry because you're zooming in? Zooming out the image gets smaller--sorry don't quite understand what you're asking hahaha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Irma-C In reply to zearyu [2013-06-15 15:35:11 +0000 UTC]

No it's fine- I figured as much! XD I noticed that on other's artwork, when you zoom in, it's crystal clear and I'm not sure how people get that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to Irma-C [2013-06-15 15:41:17 +0000 UTC]

Alot of people usually draw at a really large size, like my images are 3300x5000 pixels, so since that's much bigger than your screen when you zoom in it's still clear xD When they upload it they resize it to be smaller.

Cool tutorial! ^^ But,..what if I don't have the (simple circle) option? I have set my settings like yours and I don't have this option,..Is there an other way to draw nice lines like this one in your tutorial? ;3;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to Luurei [2013-03-06 14:28:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!! All SAI should have circle as default :'D If you don't have it I'm not sure what you have haha, it might be called something else but your default shape should be circle...:'D

This looks very helpful! Thanks!
Question, when do you switch off to the pen tool? I see you used the brush for the eyes. Do you switch to the pen when lining the hair? Or does it matter? XD

zearyu In reply to TheAmateurSketch [2012-12-26 11:08:55 +0000 UTC]

I actually don't use the pen tool anymore nowadays ahaha xD I just use the brush tool nowadays for everything for lineart :'D

Im having trouble keeping my lines smooth using this method, is it just something I have to get better through practicing? or am I doing something wrong xP

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to Spikandfrends [2012-10-18 01:23:53 +0000 UTC]

If you made all your settings the same as mine then you just need practice! The program won't do all the work just like your handwriting won't get neater on its own ahahahah Just imagine it like using a paintbrush, you need to lift the paint brush gradually in order to make a nice clean stroke

Hmm, I've been looking at different lineart tutorials and whanot.

How do you feel about the linework layer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to Kikuneechan [2012-10-15 04:28:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't like it because it looks too stiff for me haha, I like the loos and slightly messy linework, it gives it sort of something that vector lines can't give unless you try reeaaallly hard xD

Woo! what I needed! SAI basics c:

I see you don't mind questions, see, I discovered (give me a medal, yo) that SAI mixes colours, so when I lined in colour it mixes them which ain't nice sometimes D:< is there aaaany option where I can temporarily shut this down?

Thankies in advance c:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to sindos [2012-10-02 22:48:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes SAI does mix colors but so does every other program haha. It could be mixing because you're working on the same layer that has other colors on it. Or if your intention was to work on that same layer and you don't want your colors to mix it's because of your brush settings. You should play around with blending, dilution, and persistence. All this effects your brush and how it blends or doesn't blend. Another thing you should check is your density of the brush, that also effects if it blends

what are the benefits of the brush tool vs the pen tool in SAI?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zearyu In reply to 5UNNYR4Y3 [2012-09-20 00:00:46 +0000 UTC]

It's just a difference of texture you get from it, just like comparing a actual brush and a actual pen in real life is what I can say haha. You can try different tools and settle with what you're most comfortable with or prefer more!
