What bugs me generally is when people take a screencap, erase the background from around a character, and call it a vector. That doesn't even come close to qualifying.

For examples, just go to derpibooru and search under the tag "not a vector"

Zedrin In reply to SketchMCreations [2017-05-17 22:24:14 +0000 UTC]

wew lad that is always obnoxious, even more so than someone tracing over a screencap in paint.

The only thing worse is when someone uploads just a screenshot of something without any alpha or erasing.

Hmm, seeing this was incredibly useful.

I always thought Vectors and Traces were one and the same, but this helps clear up the difference.

if you have some art you don't have vectors of do you have to vectorise it before animating or is there a way around it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to Ignition191 [2016-09-10 01:59:18 +0000 UTC]

If you're gonna use existing art in animation, for flash-based you'll need to redraw it or vectorize it somehow. Raster images can't scale and skew and distort without getting a lot of pixelation and loss of detail. Plus, I know flash for instance is very slow to manipulate raster images, even just for dragging them into position.

Just curious... I mostly use SAI for...well, everything, and I've always found SAI's linework tool to be easier to use and much less technical than the pen tool in Adobe programs.
I saw someone else ask about the linework tool in SAI and you said it's still rasterized, but whenever I've use it, the layer still needs to be set to Rasterize after drawing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to SpicePrincess [2016-08-15 23:03:04 +0000 UTC]

When I had posted that, Sai hadn't implemented vector layers yet, actually.

However,Β Sai's vector layers aren't genuine vectors. While they can scale and operate a lot like them, they can't be converted to a vector format, similar to Clip Studio Paint. Plus, the pen tool in Sai (and CSP) are NOT pen tools--they're just brush tools with 'pen' as a description of their edging and shape.Β Β That's why it's less technical.Β An actual pen tool is something more a kin to the curve tool, basing itself around nodes and anchors and splines.

And even then the exports are still not vectors. I use vector layers for my lineart in CSP, but that's because they have the advantage of scaling and make for easier coloring/correcting. They're still pixel-based when I'm done, though.

Just a small little question. How do vector something from a full screencap? Is it just like cutting it out?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to HeartStorm4ever [2016-05-09 11:32:43 +0000 UTC]

Not quite. It's a bit of tracing as well as reverse engineering (figuring out how the scene was composed).

You still have to make every component. If you just cut things out you're cutting out pixels, which are not vector

tbh vectoring screencaps though is limited in its use, there's only so much you can use Β it for

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeartStorm4ever In reply to Zedrin [2016-05-09 21:08:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I get it. I may try to do it, one day ^^

If you don't vector from screencaps, what do you recommend vectoring from?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to HeartStorm4ever [2016-05-09 22:06:02 +0000 UTC]

your own stuff, tbh, or freehand. You don't need something existing to make a vector. Vectoring something that already exists is fine and all, but that's really just a microchosm of what vectors can do.

Vectors are meant for extreme resolution images (e.g., say you want to print very high res or you want to make a giant banner) and scalable graphics. Most of my vectors are used in shirt designs and for animation, since flash uses scaling graphics and cannot easily animate raster content (or edit it at all).

Inkscape is free, do a google search for it. Illustrator you can get from Adobe's CC program, single programs are like $15 or $20 a month.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to TanukiTime [2015-10-25 23:16:48 +0000 UTC]

Not at all. Linework in sai is still rasterized, no matter how clean it looks.
Some programs have vector tools in them, like photoshop, however they still output raster images in the final product. As far as I know, Sai doesn't have any vector tools either.

On a side note, vector graphics have been around since the 80s through of computer assisted graphics . The fact that they started to become popular around the people who vector fromΒ MLPΒ it's because it's derived from Flash. And yes! Vector graphics are commonly used to design logos, creative typography and more because they retain their structure no matter what scale you use. I worked with the easiest of tools to vector since the early 90s such as Powerpoint, CorelDraw,Β Freehand and Illustrator.

anything you can draw normally you can vector as well. You can make literally anything that's visual--and as a vector, it'd be easy to animate, even, if you have Flash to import it
