Aaah that is great! Thank you very much. Have a nice day. :3

This is wonderful, thank you! I've known what a vector was, but only the base definition (especially the no-pixelization thing). This explains wonderfully what I've been curious about for a while.

While I already know what vectors are, I thought I'd read this and see what it had to say. I have to say this is one of the best explanations I've seen.

I made this cause it's a lot easier to just toss people a DA link instead of reiterating myself again and again xD

AHHHHH thank you so much for making this because I was seriously about to make something like this myself. Every time I see the word vector applied to a raster image I just... >:U

I do wonder how the misconception happened in the first place though.

Thanks, that's very helpful. My friend has given me false information of what a vector is, and I've been using the term incorrectly.

Well done! I enjoyed reading this even though I am certainly aware of what a vector is

Could you clarify something for me? What do you mean by "If you want to blame someone for tracing/recoloring, blame those who use the .PNG exports as such..."? (It's in the Closing Notes section, 5th bullet.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to mewtwo-EX [2013-06-08 17:58:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm referring to those who save the .PNG exports, then recolor/trace those and try to say they're vectoring as well (when they're raster images anyway).

mewtwo-EX In reply to Zedrin [2013-06-08 19:13:43 +0000 UTC]

Ah. Easy to tell because of the aliasing. Thanks for clarifying

This is one of the best, and most detailed explanations I've seen regarding the nature of vectors.

Great Job!

It's a shame that Ponyscape wasn't mentioned tho... but I guess that's the drawback to being an advanced derivative of Inkscape.

Sarxis In reply to ??? [2013-06-08 06:53:25 +0000 UTC]

I've just started vectoring, and there certainly is a lot of tech to learn. I would say that good vectoring is/can be an art, as the vector 'artist' will need to make judgements on how to convert an often blurry image that might have animation errors into something more pleasing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to Sarxis [2013-06-08 06:57:15 +0000 UTC]

well yeah, but the technical side of it that focuses on rebuilding/tracing scenes isn't quite an artistic skill, but rather a technical one.

Freehand vectors meanwhile require both technical know-how and artistic ability.

This is a great explanation and will certainly come in handy in the future.

Although another common misconception that might be nice to include is that many people seem to think that a transparent background is what makes a vector.

thecuckoobird In reply to VladimirMacHolzraum [2013-06-08 03:24:58 +0000 UTC]

Previous to getting into vectoring myself, I was one of those pathetic people who thought that ;_;
I thought a vector was an image with thick lines, high quality, and a transparent background. (aka, MLP style art saved as a PNG) ... *hangs head in shame*

SilverRainclouds In reply to VladimirMacHolzraum [2013-06-08 02:58:52 +0000 UTC]

It is truly sad how many people believe that.

masemj In reply to ??? [2013-06-08 02:17:01 +0000 UTC]

Very good overview the only thing I'd add is explaining that PNG/JPG/etc are raster images (describing a scene pixel by pixel, possibly with lossy compression to save space) as to make it clear why they aren't vectors.

Yoshimon1 [2013-06-08 00:53:36 +0000 UTC]

That pretty much covers everything, I think. Nice little tutorial.

One little suggestion: To prevent some possible confusion, maybe add a sentence somewhere like:
"99% of the "vectors" you can see (and save via right-click>save image as) on dA, tumblr, EQD, ... are just png files created by rastering the vector at some high resolution. If you want to get the actual vector, search for a download link for the svg file (usually in the description)."

Zedrin In reply to SoulDragonWithFlow [2013-06-07 23:48:00 +0000 UTC]

Nope. You have no idea how frustrating it is that people think this. The definition of a vector has nothing to do with poses or backgrounds.

Seriously, this is ridiculous. Someone say something, OOOHHHHHHH, WE MUST STOP HIM!

Someone else says something else, OOOOOHHHHHHHHHH, WE MUST STOP HIM!

Talking about a/an picture/image, OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH, WE MUST FIND AN ARGUMENT.

Just talk, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, MUST ARGUE!

Walao leh, small things also want to argue. All no brains is it? I suggest these people go do something else... All die la.

Zedrin In reply to WaterContainer [2013-06-08 01:08:40 +0000 UTC]

Suggesting people to kill themselves over this is equally immature.

Point in case, the reasoning of people like Arthur in this fandom is annoying at best and cancerous at worst. It's leading to a lot of art theft, including theft and resale of my own work just because I agreed to let someone make a vector.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WaterContainer In reply to Zedrin [2013-06-08 01:11:59 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm equally immature. That's quite okay.

At least I have the common sense to know that an argument like that has a meaningless level of, let me see, zero.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zedrin In reply to WaterContainer [2013-06-08 01:23:34 +0000 UTC]

You're being openly hostile to me over a matter I'm not even involved in. Any common sense you claim to have is totally invalidated by that.

WaterContainer In reply to Zedrin [2013-06-08 01:25:54 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty then. Good to know that I have invalidated common sense.
