Description
This is my third extra pic for the HARPG'S Next Top Horse show, hosted by *Kalesta ! This was absolutely BEYOND irritating to shade, there's SO much in this picture. The lines were one thing, but shading took AT LEAST three times as long as lining did. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out though, and I'm super excited I'm done with it!

From left to right is LCS She Don't Mess (Missy) and Alicia Martin (*SunriseRidgeRanch ), PD Handdown Hancock (Spanky) and Paisley (*painted-cowgirl ), and finally my PD Chex High Kaliber (Kasey) and Aubrie Collins.

Story:

The bleep of the timer sounded loudly as a big bay jumper trotted out of his course, his rider looking quite proud of him. The pleasant July breeze felt nice through Aubrie’s long-sleeved shirt as she waited on Kasey for her barrel racing round. Her hands were shaking with nerves, and although Kasey was relaxed now, that would change as soon as they walked into the ring. As another horse replaced the bay jumper, Aubrie decided to take a walk, since she had at least 3 horses ahead of her run, and they weren’t speed horses so they would take much longer than a barrel run or jumping course..
“Kasey girl, you wanna walk around?” Aubrie said quietly, nudging the small Paint mare gently with her heels. The mare groaned, placing weight on the hind leg that she had been resting, and begrudgingly walked off around the ring. Aubrie approached the fence of Misty Meadows’ pastures, gently encouraging Kasey to take longer steps and stretch out her leg muscles, as they had probably tensed up a bit after her warmup. The mare responded immediately, lengthening her strides, and Aubrie smiled. Picking a small patch of dirt that extended from the ring into the grass of the pastures, Aubrie brought Kasey to a halt and waited, squinting against the sun to watch Rue, Hickory Ridge Farms’ small roan POA mare jog easily along the rail, blending effortlessly into a figure 8 at the lope. Aubrie took a deep breath, scratching Kasey’s withers as she cocked her hind foot again, clearly annoyed at the change in position.

“What’s up, Carrot Top?” teased a mocking voice, pulling up beside Kasey on their mount.
“PAISLEY. How many times have I told you not to call me Carrot Top? Josh might pick it up!” Aubrie teased back, trying to poke the blonde in the side but missing badly, accidentally giving her small, blue roan stallion a jab in the neck. Spanky gave her the stink eye, and Aubrie laughed. “Sorry, Spanky.”
“It’s a habit. And hey, look who’s here? It’s a Painted Desert reunion!” Paisley replied, grinning a bit too mischievously. She reached out to scratch Kasey’s neck, but missed on purpose hitting Aubrie in the shin.
“Ow! Paisley!” she laughed, punching her lightly in the arm. Paisley just laughed, and stuck her reins around her saddle horn like Aubrie had done, crossing her arms.

“What’s going on here?” another voice called from a couple yards down the fence. Aubrie turned in the saddle and spotted Alicia, from Sunrise Ridge Ranch, jogging over to their little group on their well-known mare, Missy. It was hard to miss her, the neon-green tack was visible from a mile away.
“Hey Alicia!” Aubrie called, grinning. Paisley waved, and as Missy settled down next to Spanky, Alicia waved back.
“How’s it going over here?” Alicia prompted, clearly looking just as nervous as Aubrie felt.
“Nerves, nerves, and more nerves,” Paisley replied, confirming Aubrie’s thoughts. At least she wasn’t the only one.
“I wouldn’t talk, I’m up in two,” Aubrie sighed, clenching her teeth as Rue exited the arena and handed it over to a large buckskin Lusitano decked out in dressage gear.
“Hey, I’m after this horse, don’t even go there!” Alicia replied, smiling shakily and running her hand through Missy’s mane.
“Guess you got me beat. Good luck though!” Aubrie said, giving a weak smile. She was starting to feel sick to her stomach.
Alicia smiled back, adjusting her seat. The three sat back and watched the buckskin, performing difficult maneuvers like courbettes and levades. He was good, which just mounted Aubrie’s nerves higher. As he finished his flawless routine, Missy’s name was called and Alicia sucked in a huge breath. “Wish me luck, girls!” she said, a bit shaken, and asked Missy to walk. As she left for the arena gate and entered at an easygoing lope, Paisley turned to Aubrie and smiled, if a little bit nervously. Apparently, this show was only just beginning.
