There's not enough Culture fanart on this site, great piece.

I love the Culture novels. this looks awesome. Don't you just hate how halo gets the credit for orbitals?

Yup. Mind you, Resistance Is Character Forming

Very Halo-ish. Great work, I'll have to watch the progress.

Thanks. As I stated in another comment it's actually based on the work of Iain M Banks, a Scottish Sci-Fi author. I can recommend Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games as introductions to his work.

Then, Bungie probably borrowed their concept ideas from Banks, I hadn't read him before. Thanks for the recomendation, I'll check it out.

I like it so far, however the trees seem a little grainy, which detracts from the realism of the piece.

Low quality render - the final will be much tighter.

Ah, now - I only yesterday took the other version of this out of my devwatch thing. I was going to comment, but realised that the only useful things I could say would wait... which is rather ironic really. Anyway, here goes:

I thought the moon was too stark on the last render, but I love what you've done with it here. The way the clouds mask it almost is clever, and avoids the sharpness that was present in the last version. I think I just said that, but I *could* just be highlighting the fact that I really like this new way

I didn't - and still don't - understand the significance of the pillar structure in the background. I'm assuming it's something to do with the orbital structure, but I don't understand it... it also seems rather grainy, which I'm not really sure about. But then, I haven't read the book, and I don't know what you had in mind. Certainly, it adds something to the sci-fi style feel that the piece has. I made a note on the piece of paper (I still have the notes from the last piece... not sure if that's good or not ) saying "dark rather than light", which I think was about the pillar... I can't really remember, but making it darker would blend it into the feel of the piece, in my opinion. It just seems highly unnatural to me. But, as I said, this isn’t my piece, and I haven't read the book.

I am definitely incredibly keen on the addition of the birds to the piece - they add depth and something which I can't explain... but it makes it more realistic. Truly fab.

ooo - I really like the way the ring was taken off the moon (or planet... I keep calling it a moon, but it could be a planet). And I like the trees. Not that I didn't like the mountains, but the trees seem to fit better, with the birds and such... makes it seem more populated. Somehow.

The other change that I really like is the crossing of the planet/moon and the column/pillar thing. I really wasn't sure about that, but what you've done here is really good, in my opinion. I really can't wait to see it finished

Hiya - The "Pillar" thing is the curve of the orbital structure in the distance.

An orbital is a gigantic structure, some tens of thousands of kilometres in diameter. It spins to simulate gravity and the inner surface is terraformed into a biosphere. There are giant crystal walls at the sides to keep the air in.

What you are seeing is the sweep of the ring receeding away and upwards. The speckled pattern is formed by clouds over the distant land-surface.

ahhh... that makes a lot more sense then, I suppose. I read the wikipedia link, but I still couldn't figure it out... I never even considered that it might be moving - I automatically thought it was stationary...

thanks

It's by eon software [link] It's kind of like Bryce, but I feel, particularly with the latest releases, rather better. Vue Infinite is the latest, and I'm saving up for it.

ah, i loved halo

i love this. how long did it take too render?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zer05um In reply to QaysA [2005-08-19 10:47:01 +0000 UTC]

About 10hrs.

It's really meant to be an Orbital of the Iain M Banks school of Sci-fi; but Halo is clearly meant to be a baby-orbital, and the Covenant communications look like Culture ship communications.

cool, whats an Orbital though?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zer05um In reply to QaysA [2005-08-19 12:14:00 +0000 UTC]

Um, an Orbital is an artificial ring-shaped structure, typically a few tens of housands of miles in diameter and maybe a thousand miles deep. It spin to simulate gravity and has an inhabitable inner surface, with bounding walls to keep the atmosphere in.
