Description As per ~Droakir 's request I have created a tutorial on how to do the chainmaille weave Dragonscale.
I must say I'm quite proud of myself, this came out much better than I expected

Thank you

Your friend's pretty lucky, I haven't had the chance to make any women's wear yet, but it's something I'd like to try sometime

definetly it might be a bit before i can make anything worth while, but with this i'll at least have half an idea of what i'm doing ^_^

Interesting. Very interesting actually. But how do you make this durable? I mean; if the rings has been cut in one end in order to connect the rings, will it not fall apart easily? Do you just bend them, or do you use another method?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zikes In reply to SteveBarkin [2006-10-08 12:12:27 +0000 UTC]

It's surprisingly durable, actually. There is a cut in the ring so that you can bend it open and closed, and there's a small risk that a ring that's not closed properly can slip out (especially if two such closures should happen to line up) but that's actually pretty rare under normal conditions. There are people who want their maille to be durable enough for mock combat, and will actually rivet the two ends together, but it's not necessary unless the maille needs to withstand a lot of stress and impacts

SteveBarkin In reply to zikes [2006-10-09 19:55:15 +0000 UTC]

Really? Cool. I'm very tempted at trying this out, but I don't think I would afford the metal wire to make the rings right now.

Very nice! A bit different from how i learned to weave DS but it seems like your method goes a hair faster than a ring-by-ring approach

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zikes In reply to kerrick [2006-10-08 12:24:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! To tell the truth, I use the ring-by-ring approach myself, I just use multiple rings here to cut down on steps I figure once people understand how to do it they'll use whatever technique is most comfortable for them

Great!

But the spelling "maille" is a pointless pretention. The word has been spelt "mail" for centuries.

*cough*

I've always found it pretentious to go around telling other people that they're trying to be pretentious.

Yes, I'm pretentious. T'is a part of my charm and appeal. I'm a sexy bitch who can get away with it....most other people are just poseur assholes.

Just an opinion.

zikes In reply to DavidChameleon [2006-10-07 01:03:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Both spellings are actually correct, much like "color" and "colour." Most of the online maille community I know of prefers the "maille" spelling, so that's the preference I've picked up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidChameleon In reply to zikes [2006-10-07 02:33:02 +0000 UTC]

That's both a good and a bad comparison. Good, because "color" is incorrect and dialectal whereas "colour" is the correct English spelling. Bad, because it is a totally different kettle of fish, since the difference between the correct "mail" and incorrect "maille" is not geographical but simply a matter of "mail" being used in the real world, and "maille" being a silly internet fad spelling that you not even find in the vast majority of dictionaries.

The fad spelling "maille" is used for two reasons and two reasons only: (1) a pretentious way of saying "I'm a real expert who makes this stuff, so I use a cool spelling that you ordinary people don't know about"; (2) to differentiate it from "mail" in the sense of "post".

The first is completely unjustifiable. The second is also extremely weak, given the lack of historical justification for using the French spelling, plus the fact that putting the word "chain" in front of it already removes all ambiguity.

One might also point out that the French word "maille" is not even pronounced the same as "mail". It is pronounced something like "my".

I know way more about this than you so you ought to give up now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Drocan In reply to DavidChameleon [2006-10-07 06:28:58 +0000 UTC]

Then again, putting the word "chain" in front of it would also be completely redundant, and was in fact only first used in conjunction with "mail" in the 1700s. The differentiation between "mail" and "post" lacks historical justification as you mentioned, but adding "chain" is no better.
The French spelling, with those two additional letters, is perfectly correct... but really only in French. So I'm with you there.
But the last sentence was hardly necessary and almost seems to detract from your credibility by way of making you seem equally pretentious, unless you did indeed to a thorough background check on =Zikes and best him in several previous debates to confirm your intellectual superiority.
In which case I apologize for questioning you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidChameleon In reply to Drocan [2006-10-07 08:06:34 +0000 UTC]

No need for background checks. The fact that he insisted on the incorrect spelling shows that he knows little about this issue.

zikes In reply to DavidChameleon [2006-10-07 03:12:27 +0000 UTC]

You're absolutely right, totally pretentious of me. Boy howdy, I won't go around thinking I know more than anyone else anymore, you can count on that

Great tutorial I love chainmaile! I've done some myself but I need to find a place that has better metals to use. At one point I was just using hoop rings from jewelry

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zikes In reply to ewm [2006-10-07 00:28:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Depending on what kind of maille you're after, I might know of a few places to look for wire. I go to Fire Mountain Gems for my silver, and the aluminum I use for larger stuff I tend to buy in bulk spools from welding supply stores. I'll sometimes find some really small aluminum at Wal-Mart, that's what I used in that Choker of Insanity you faved (thanks for that! ), so you might also check around local stores for picture hanging wire or craft wire

Oh, man! That's incredible! I'd been searching for a good dragonscale tutorial. I'd really like to see a kingsmaille tutorial, I can't quite get it. @.o

zikes In reply to Foxicity [2006-10-08 12:28:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Trouble with kingsmaille? Don't believe I've ever tried that weave, but as I understand it it's either 4-1 or 6-1 but each ring is doubled up. I found this tutorial on the mailleartisans site: [link] I'd like to see kingsmaille done with different sized rings, such as those used in Dragonscale. If the two ring sizes were also different colored that'd have a very interesting look, I think

yeah, thats cool . . .
i dont suppose your tutorial explains how you thread one unbroken steel doughnut through another one? coz id like to try this, but this tutorial is more for the weaving technique than the actual process? all good, a mean tutorial anyway. . .

zikes In reply to tainted-marrow [2006-10-08 12:36:30 +0000 UTC]

It's meant more to cover the weave than the process, but you can find a great beginner tutorial for making maille here: [link]

oh, no thanks, ive already found out how to make maille, ive started making my rings. i dont think ill try the dragonscale just yet though, just the 4-one whatever its called, its got four in the name. . . fairly basic techniques. . .
thanks anyways!

Woohoo, I love making this weave It's one of my favorites, actually. Too bad a shirt made out of it would me realllly heavy, lol. Great tutorial btw, very nicely rendered. Keep up the good work! you should upload this to M.A.I.L. for sure!

Thanks! I actually did try to upload it to M.A.I.L. once, but they have a size limit for individual images. Eventually I might chop it up and try again, though

for somthing made in 2004, sure took a while for the staff to find it

I love this. Did you make it in a 3d program or are you that ood in photoshop? XD Either way, I'll be using it later! *faves*

I know what you mean, it surprised the heck out of me that something so old ended up getting a DD

I used a 3D program to make this, Bryce 5, and then pieced the renders together and added text in Fireworks MX
