Description This is a Quad medium mech for the same Lords of Ruin Universe as the rest of my art. This one was made for me by mattPLOG   for the for the crossover quest The Lords of Ruin .

The Romulus is a 709-ton quad mech developed as part of Project: CAWLR meant to create a new style for the Helghan Mech Corps. The new line of mechs draws even more inspiration from the MAWLR then the smaller Equites did. The work on Project: CAWLR began nearly from the point of getting Battlemech technology. Though because the only samples available at the time was biped models the project was moved to the back burner while work on the first bipeds the Titan and Princeps was completed. Once those mechs were done and still only having observations of the few Quad mechs in use by the Inner Sphere during the Rimward front of the 4th Succession War the decision was made to further develop mechs using the MAWLR as a base though at a much reduced scale obviously. The first of which was the light quad Equites mech.

After the Equites was followed up with the third biped the Exploratores it was decided to work on the creation of the larger Quads with a focus on integrating advanced technology. This way the Romulus could better last on the battlefield without becoming obsolete quickly. The first of the new weapons were a pair of the new Improved Petrusite Cannon that was one ton lighter, takes up a third less volume, and deals a tenth more damage without an increase in heat build up. The second new tech is the use of the Double Strength Heat Sinks. These took awhile to develop and while the increased size makes them a bit of an issue for the Quads to install it is still better than using single heatsinks. The third "new" tech was the installation of a single Stahl-10 Multi-Missile-Launcher with two tons of swappable LRM/SRM ammo. The fourth bit of the techs is the use of the jump jets while jump jets were installed on the Princeps these new jump jets are designed to work properly on a heavy Quad mech frame so it doesn't unbalance the mech when it flies or lands before they would be installed on other Quads in the future. The last bit of technology is the most expensive of the new systems. It is the installation of 350 rated Extra-Light Fusion Engine taking up torso space but giving enough mass to install the rest of the systems as well as the eleven and a half tons of CASE equipped armor for the ammo. Due to the limited space the nature of Quad mechs suffer from no Endo-steel or Ferro-Fibrous armor was considered for installation.

When looking at the results of Project: CAWLR it is easy to see the lineage for them especially if the person looking has seen the MAWLRs on Helghan during training exercises and shows of strength for the Ambassadors on the planet. The products of the project are also getting vast praise from the Helghan General Staff for meeting most of the needs of the military. As such procurement is scheduled to begin once the bureaucracy is done filing all the requirements. A procedure made even more complicated as the project was a multi-corporation endeavor by Pharaoh Industries, Mir Industrial Union, Stahl Arms, and Hephaestus Ltd.

There was also technically a second model of the Romulus created as well. This 1HRL model was still the same frame, engine, and basics as the original the only difference was the weapon systems. Instead of the new Improved Petrusite Cannons this version used the by that point tried and true Helghast Large Lasers in their place. The lowered heat output also allowed for the dropping of two Double Heat Sinks. This combined with the Large Lasers weighing even less than the Improved P-Cannons saved enough weight for upgrading the missiles count. The ammo count was doubled to four tons protected by CASE.

This model was developed for a mech that was just as capable but that didn't have to use Petrusite for its main weapons. The fact remained that Petrusite was still the Helghan Republic's greatest asset. As such the use of it tends to be shifted as much as possible to larger more powerful platforms and the Navy. This means that while mechs, armored vehicles, and even the infantry are getting Petrusite weapons if it is possible to make something just as or nearly as good it should be looked into. This mentality as well the idea to create a mech that was available to allied Nations and to sell to foreign powers and Mercenaries without having to give out or tie those purchases to the Helghan Petrusite supply lines is considered a major factor.

Once the mechs started to be made available they along with the other more advanced models were moved to new elite formations instead of to the normal front line units. These new formations are made up of the advanced models Exploratores and Equites for the light sections. The Decanus ORDI versions of common mechs make up the bulk of the formation as the Medium mechs. And the smallest but heaviest part is made up of the Romulus and future 90-ton Vanguards. These formations are expected to become the steel fist of the Mech corps deployed in support of the heaviest combined arms Divisions meant to smash any enemy resistance. As of yet they have not been deployed all together as no threat has presented itself to requires that level of advanced firepower.
