The nausea struck Niv too soon and she dove straight from the edge of the cliffs into the water. Her head buzzed with anger – anger that the marine biome had such a hold on her, and anger that she a simultaneous need to explore and return home. It grew and grew…. Confusion bubbled to the surface. Usually when she hit coastal waters the knotted feeling inside faded, but now the knot inside throbbed. Each throb fed her rage at feeling trapped.

The ocean is vast so why does it feel so small?

Down, down, down, she dove, away from the light dancing on the surface. Fish swarmed away from her and she marked them by their colors. Each hue faded as she progressed deeper – first red, then yellow, then green and violet until there was only the cold, still blue.

Nothing moved here in the dark. Not even the goblin sharks and squid wandered this far. Structures rose in the distance, shadows of rock against the seafloor’s ‘sky’. Were there things living among the spires and bridges? Niv did not care. All she cared about was that the knot had ceased throbbing and the buzzing in her head was no more.

It’s so…quiet.

Niv closed her eyes. She did not sleep, for esk never needed it. She let the silence be, wrapping it around her like a blanket and drifting…
