The British thought that their good old SMLE was not second to any other gun, after all, speaking about infantry,Β their main enemies were the Italians, the Japanese and a small German expeditionary corp in Africa, for the rest the Russians and then the Americans Β solved everything else.

The Bren Gun is still used to this day, I believe, by third world countries and such.

Nice, except I don't think the British used the M1 and M1A1Thompson.Β They did acquire Model 1928 and 28A1s I think.

I've found several references and photo, they weren't directly purchased, but they come with the Lend-Lease act.

The M1928 had been purchased then it was lend, the M1 and M1A1 were lend.
But at the end of the folk I replaced the M1 with a M1928.

Ok, I never thought the M1 variants were used by the British commonwealth because they had the sten series by then. But I knew their M1928 Thompson had some unique features such as how the sling swivels were mounted.

Didn't know Bran was based on a Czech submachine gun!
Thompson was a decent weapon, best of its time till the Germans developed their selective-fire Stg 44!

The Thompson was a very expansive weapon,Β even after the simplifications made to the M1 model, the M1928 modelΒ had a bolt made of solid bronze.

The Sten if I recall was kind of an emergency weapon put into production after the British left a good deal of their equipment at Dunkirk. It only cost $10 to make whereas the M1A1 Thompson I believe was $25 per gun. I'm told after the war the Israelis made Stens out of pipes and manufactured the cartridges from discarded lipstick containers.

I agree with you, it was a raw weapon designed in the dark years of the war,Β
I read that it could also be produced in a small blacksmith's workshop.

it wouldn't be that surprising. I've read accounts of it going off if it hit something hard enough or it';s bullets bouncing off a thick coat.
