I will agree with some comments about your choice of leaving in the photo a part of the ground..
This makes this shot to be something different than another sky shot.
It is a great touch up to the whole composition.
The feeling of movement this image brings out is outstanding..
Excellent work, well done

A unique photo shot in an unique moment. As MoroseInsomniac said, the groundline plays a very important part in showing proportion. I also like your choice of frame for this photo. Keep up the good work!

I am in love with your gallery. This aurora is the best. I like the zigzag pattern of it.

amazing color!! wow i can't imagine how overwhelming this would have been in person.
I kind of wish the road and road signs didnt stand out as much. They are such a sharp contrast but it is still an amazing shot!

Well I'm an Aussie.... living in tasmania.... school had just gotten to its busiest, just before term ended... i stayed on our garage roof until i couldn't keep my eyes open any longer, then had the worst day at school BUT! Since we moved here five or so years ago there's always been something i've though 'if only we hadn't moved', seeing the aurora australis was just- OK! I LOVE TASSIE! no regrets AT ALL! I was amazed, must had looked like an idiot smiling to myself amongst a pile of blankets on our garage roof - couldn't take a photo of it though!! Too much ambient light ... there's a house just near us that had this large bright light that pissed me off so much!! 'Twas freeeeeeezing that night!
I just wish i'd been able to photography, though i don't think anything would really do it full justice.
A FAVOURITE!

This I like. This I REALLY like. Excellant work on this shot, and remembering to bring some element of balance to it instead of shooting the sky just because it looked pretty. The ground adds to this piece greatly, trust me. The smaller signifigance you placed on it using the reduced bottom third means that the lights come into greater prominence; excatly what it should do.

Thanks for the comment. I was trying to do just what you said, keep enough ground in the photo that it didn't distract from the main subject, but added something more to the composition.

Amazing capture Nick! You really captured the light well, even for a long exposure.. and the like the bit of ground you kept on the bottom of the frame to give a sense of size...
I remember the first time I saw the lights is when I went with my step-mom to visit another relative.. I was asleep and she came home from a celebration nice and toasted.. anyway, she pulled me out of bed at 03.00.. it was completely worth it! Seeing them in photographs or video, is nothing compared to seeing them in person!

Thank for the comment and you are right on; there is nothing like seeing them in person. I am always in awe of them when they get good.

Yes, I cannot wait until I can go back! I have friends in Ketchikan that I have not seen in years, and some family that lives in Anchorage (and a few other places around there).. I miss all of the pontoon planes too! So relaxing to watch them come and go

Jesus! I really wish I would be able to see it!!!
I'm terribly envy that you live in Alaska lol - what a great place! (Aussie is pretty good too, just hoping not to neglect it, either)
Anyway, great shot as usual, keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Dave
