Description
Nurse Robles usually liked the outpost she was stationed at, situated in a complex series of caves and tunnels in a remote Canadian mountain. Except when she had to venture alone down tunnel D-6 to the backup supply station whenever the main lab ran out of a drug or serum they needed. The tunnels were creepy, even if they were punctuated now and again by brightly lit shafts leading up to the sunlit surface. Weird cave noises and deep silence combined to play tricks on a person's ears underground.
Then too were the reports of strange shapes in the semi-dark that other personnel had seen. She dismissed most of them as childish lies and pranks told to scare co-workers and break up the monotony of their work. Still, they played on her mind. So when she was approaching one of those brightly lit patches that someone had dumped a slimy green heap of refuse at for some reason and heard a strange noise behind her she turned toward the sound in sudden fear. Nothing in the gloom she had come from moved towards her, yet she was nervous. Slowly she backed up, approaching the relative safety of sunlit rock and keeping her eyes peeled until her legs bumped into the heap of refuse.
She stood there for a moment, making sure nothing and no one was back there in the dark, and breathed a sigh of relief. Nothing had jumped out at her from the gloom. Laughing nervously she turned to skirt the refuse heap, when parts of it's large bulk rose up and encircled her. She had a momentary glimpse of snake-like limbs and a multitude of frogish eyes and she screamed involuntarily ...
