Description
This is an old experiment. Just a rigid rope simulation (/me hates elasticity).I've just polished it a bit and uploaded, since I saw so many bad rope simulations on the net lately...
100% actionscripted.
Use the sliders on the right to change the number of rope segments, length of each segment and gravity.
(near-zero gravity is fun
I hope you like it.
Cheers.

Awesome. I tried creating something very similar recently cos I wanted to make a game where you could whip things with your mouse, got it working alright but no where near as smooth as yours. Great stuff.

really cool, I couldnt manage this (or the ribbon in viviscape wouldnt be so stretchy )
my only comment is that a slight movement at one end of the rope seems to result in a much greater movement at the other, I know thats the case if I was to 'flick' a real rope, but its almost as though the rest of the rope weight isnt quite effecting it how it should... I dont know... I only noticed it on super low gravity though, so for all I know thats how its meant to be
awsome cool anyway

I can even image this as normal program that will follow your cursor out of Flash Window ... but it must be done in different way I suppose

Perhaps...
...well I can easily do a javaScript version of it, and make it active on the whole html page

Somehow cool... Tough can't understand if thsoe segments really have acceleration and innertion or not...

Yup, it's physics, alright: mass, weight, forces, but not a very accurate simulation, since it would be rather processor intensive to simulate an active system of 100 interconnected elements...
It looks nice, so, it's good enough for me

Yeah looks good Well i think in case of rope it is not so intensive to make it llittle bit more intensive

Meh, it's far from the real world rope, but it can pass, as it is
...in other words /me is too lazy to tweak it

damn..ive been learning actionscript for a couple years but i cant comprehend how to go about doing this... awesome!!!

ArtBIT In reply to SpicyDonut [2007-08-11 07:31:53 +0000 UTC]
Thanks man... but I keep telling people, it's not actionScript - it's physics, it's math, it's abstraction... a programming language is quite easy to learn, but that's only a tool not the skill, what you need to learn is to use that tool to solve problems... and that you learn with experience.
Just keep challenging yourself, and you'll get there.
Good luck!

haha... i think thats part of my problem... im an artist trying to do physics, math, and abstraction in code.... wrong side of the brain for me lol... but ill keep at it and thank you fro the inspiration.

Dam. These where the kind of IK physics i couldnt get when working on my little MP3 player, i was goint to have controll buttons as balls chained together, and have them sway like a rope as you moved, but i could never get any kind of swaying going.
How do you do it?

Little of physics here, little or vector math there...
If you want some help on your project, just note me with your problem and I'll do my best to help you...
Cheers mate
