Description
This is the torc I'm making/donating for the Macmillan Cancer Support auction later this month. So far there's been around 10 or 11 hours work on it. This is just the 'top' of the torc - no backing, no padding, no edging, no fastening ... so plenty more hours to go!
The felt is handmade - black with green and blue-green silk in it. Other than that, it's the usual gold-plated wire, beads, metallic threads ...
I'm quietly chuffed ... and I will update the photo as work progresses! I have until the 19th to complete this ...

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!
It's soooooo pretty! This will fetch at least £100 I BET YOU
I don't know why, but somehow I like Torc1 slightly better - the darker colour, the 'opal' bit...mmmmm....

Thank you Glad youl ike!
I like both for entirely different reasons ... Torc 1 'cos it's my first, 'cos it's predominantly black and 'cos I used the opal-like fantasy film for the first time ... but the Macmillan Torc cos I can see how I've developed my 'style'.

There'll be more I'm sure! The Macmillan one is more or less done - photos to be done when my nose stops dribbling due to cold. I'll have one more to do soon for the Laryngectomee Society, which is going to be offered as the prize for a competition ... I suggested I work the torc to the winner's colour preferences.

Working torcs gives me more space to work with the beads etc ... I started to make earrings to go with torc, but ...either I just couldn't work them right, or this darn cold I've got is affecting my mind/creativity ... so I put them to one side for now ...

The magnet ones are good - pairs one that goes front, 'tother at back of lobe ... and they work - afore I had extra holes put in my ears, I used to wear a pair of magnetic jade 'stud' earrings ...

I'd always thought if I got my ears pierced, I'd have a little hole at the top of my ear, maybe two - one for a ring and one for a stud. I'm not allowed to have my lobes pierced, says my sister.

All the same, my Mum will never let me have a tattoo.
I don't want a great big detailed thing on my back that will embarass me trying to get a job later in life, maybe just a little magic symbol - an eye of horus, an ankh, a pentacle, a goddess mark...

I have a tattoo ..... it's of a kind of tribal/celtic phoenix ... I was never going to have a tattoo until I saw this design ... It goes across my shoulders and down my back a little ... not all the way across my shoulders ... it's easily hidden, though I don't wear low-necked tops to school ... and I don't really show it at othertimes ...

Yeha - I need to patent my idea of a Henna Pen. You buy re-fills of Henna and draw on your own temporary tattoos. I don't know if something like that exists already...

Hunt around the internet!
My nephew had a henna tattoo ... it reacted badly with his skin, he ended up with chemical burns and still has the scars now a good few months down the line ... hopefully it'll fade in time, he's only 9 ....

OWCH I had a temporary tattoo for Comic Relief once (it came free with a red nose) and I didn't have any reactions. However, when I dyed my hair it felt like my scalp was on fire! It was worse than having nits, and then my hair went jet black instead of dark brown.

I have to be VERY careful what hair dyes I use ... some give me an allergic reaction which has my eyes all dry and itchy, and my scalp too!
My hair has been, in it's time, all shades of red and orange and blonde and red-purple, and blue-black too. I've never gone green or bright pink or ultra violet .. or post-box red. It's come close with the red a time or two though! Nowadays, I aim for a natural golden brown, which is more or less what my natural colour would be if I wasn't so white!
In fact, I must get my hair dyed afore I go back to work next week ... the white is more than slightly visible ... I did start to grow the colour out a year ago, but my hair is so long (it's nearly waist length) and it was horrible as the colour was growing out ... After 3 months I gave up and dyed it all again. I'm sure it's not good for me or the environment, but without having my hair cut short ... well ...

MasamRay In reply to Artwyrd [2007-11-16 18:22:42 +0000 UTC]
I'm at a difficult age for dying hair - because any colour other than blonde or brown instantly results in you being branded. When the dark brown dye 'malfuncitoned', everyone was giving me funny looks and every conversation around me seemed to contain the words "Goth" or "Emo". It's faded quite a bit now, but it may not wash out completely. If it doesn't, I may not need to dye it again. It's definately darker, and the natural blonde bits have been replaced with red.
It probably went wrong in the first place because Mum used a whole tube of dye on my hair (which is quite short)

I never worried about being 'branded', not even when I was in school. I must admit, with my naturally fair complexion, the black or blue-black made me look half-dead, but the very long ago ex-boyfriend/partner liked it so I used to do it from time to time to keep him happy ... now what a sad admission that is!

Heh...our school colour is Navy and you're only allowed to dye your hair natural colours. There's a blue-black dye which would make my natural colour go dark blue. I've always wondered if I could dye my hair blue-black if it was in uniform colours...

I'm not sure you'd get away with navy hair ... sadly. Schools seem to be rather, what's the word I'm looking for, oh, yes, conservative ... but you could try asking the quesiton and see what the answer was ...

I have to say, my school in particular is staffed by control freaks. They won't let us wear different coloured scarves - even out of school! They say it's because we're representing our school. Fat chance I'd want to do that. Ever since it got into the league tables its just be ultra-paranoid about image.

Yeah, being one of the young rebels I understand just how infuriating it is, at this age, to have this bunch of people trying to control you. I would so much rather we could just wear our own clothes - I'm sure I'd work better without a stiff navy shirt and coudoroy trousers.

I can see both sides of the arguments for and against uniforms ... uniforms can be a social leveller, but unfortunately most pupils manage to find a way to make personal statements about affluence, allegiances, 'in crowd', etc ... I do know that I don't really take much notice of what a pupil's wearing, unless it's really in your face wrong ... or the makeup has been applied with a plasterer's trowel, or they can be given a mark on the tango scale ...

Well, I think clothing could be restricted a bit. But as long as it allows me to wear my White Horse or Green Man t-shirt, black trousers (NOT big bulky navy coudory) and fluffy boots and maybe some fingerless gloves for good measure I'd be happy.
As for me, contrary to sterotypical 14 year olds, I just can't be bothered with make-up. It would be nice to hide the odd spot with some concealer, but I just can't summon up the time or the effort.
How about you?

I don't wear much make-up - mainly eye shadow and mascara. Sometimes lipstick if I remember to wear it! I'm old enough that I don't get trouble much with spots, but I have this fab stuff from the Body Shop which works a treat on spots, blemishes and dark circles around the eyes - I've had my tube a goodly while now, and I think it's called Lightning Touch ...

YOu know nothing about treacle? You've never tried treacle toffee? It's dark brown, sticky, very thick and viscous and not very sweet at all. If I remember right, it's a good source of iron. And it just has to be added to gingerbread to make it sticky and not so sweet tasting!
