Description
Cosmic Haloes by Michael C. Turner© 2008/2009 ~ Galactic Visions Space Art
Original Painting ~ Acrylic on stretched canvas using traditional bristle brush techniques 50"X50"~
Minor Digital modifications made in Corel Paint X
A ringed gas giant planet viewed from the icy surface of one of its outer orbital moons dominates the debris-filled sky (from multiple collisions within the planetary system). Colossal chunks of a former lunar sibling have formed a temporary ring which orbits the outer moon. Other lunar siblings and stars glow ethereally through the dust and vapor creating halo-like effects.

The halos could be an effect of ice crystals in the atmosphere of the moon, a little like moondogs .... but whatever they are, i love this POV

Greetings,
You are correct. The halo effect results from atmospheric ice crystals which is part of the reason for the title, the other being the halo-like images of the ring systems.
Best regards,

I'm happy to see that your work is grounded in realism IMO it makes it that much more impressive ... keep it up

Cool. From the smaller veiw, I was almost suspecting it to be a futuristic space port or something. But I guess that was just my way of thinking. This is VERY nice. Great job. And it's a good title for it too.

Looks pretty cool, The gas giant has a unique look that gives the impression that the gas that makes it up is very loosly packed, as if some of it is drifting off into space, but that might just be an illusion with the halo effects
What is that drak, fuzzy sphere in fron of it though, it seems to be wedged in between the two sets of rings, is it just a really dark moon?

Greetings and thank you for looking so carefully at this one . . . Yes, it is an illusion. .. the halo effect I created was intended to give this particular appearance . . . ethereal, glowing . . . like a halo. The dark fuzzy sphere is indeed a moon which is transiting/partially eclipsing the gas giant between a major ring division. It is dark for several reasons . . . It is silhouetted against the larger/brighter gas giant, it is in waxing crescent phase (not discernable due to the brighter gas giant and the halo effects), and it is surface is made of dark matter/gases which you can see glowing with a red atmospheric "halo" . . . one of the multiple reasons I entitled this "Cosmic Haloes." I wanted the overall effect to be gaseous, ethereal; mystical . . . I am sure you understand . . . This one is rather a departure from most of my traditional art . . .

Ahh, I see...I wouldn't have thought of that, so I think it's safe to say that your'e the first artsit I've seen illustrate such an event and yes, it really does have an eerie and soft, misty look to it

Yes, you are correct. . . I also am unware of anyone who has illustrated a similar event. My objective is to create images that illustrate diverse astronomical phenomena in the Universe which would be difficult, perhaps impossible, for most people to mentally conceptualize otherwise . . . Thus my "Galactic Visions."
