Description
So here's how I made the hand for all those who asked. And here's the finished product in motion
[link]
mistake caught! it's actually 52 eye bolts!
edit*
and for all those who will or have asked. It cost me under $50 Canadian to build. I don't know what it would cost in American as I don't live there, have the same stores, or really care. but you can just use google to convert the currency and give yourself a ballpark figure.

I don't remember exactly. But they were about 1-1/2 to 2 inches long and about 1/4 inch in diameter

quite small, maybe an inch or 3/4. I got them at canadian tire. but they're made by Hillman fasteners

Very cool, ironically enough, a friend and I are trying to create a working Hellboy hand, and we were aiming at something similar to this...where did you find springs and do they wear out over time?

aternox In reply to azkardchic [2009-02-15 06:41:14 +0000 UTC]
ha, that is pretty funny. I was thinking about making a hellboy hand out of it in the summer. working on reducing the size of the hand and making a foam glove to give the hand shape.
aaaaanyways i got the springs from canadian tire (but you can probably get them from any hardware) and they haven't worn out yet.

now THIS is cool!!!
i'm gonna make one myself, one question doe: what happens if i put another 4 eye bolts lower in the palm, run the wires for the front fingers through them, just the same way the wires run through the top ones, so that i can put a plate over them as a protection, so that i can grab things without the wires getting in the way? will the fingers still work?
i figure that the angles change, and they might not work anymore, so i thought that i should make the "wrist" longer for the angles to be the same (if i attach another 4 eye bolts into the palm)...

if i understand right, then yes i think so. I also had them on the bottom of the palm.

ah, ok, so it should work, that's cool...
thx for helping out
i also want to make it a little bit more human : the same way you replicated the palm tendons using strings, i thought i could use strings, instead of springs, on the other side as well, attached to only one larger spring each. it will need a few minor ajustments so it could work propperly, but it should work...
i don't know where you came up with the idea, but it's absolutly great!

snowicedragon In reply to ??? [2009-01-25 05:58:17 +0000 UTC]
Wait, why would you cut the springs in half? Wouldn't that get rid of the loop on the end? You'd need both loops to connect the eye bolts, wouldn't you?

aternox In reply to snowicedragon [2009-01-25 13:35:28 +0000 UTC]
it was for the proper length, and yes i had to take some pliers and add the loop back to one end
