Description
This is a font I created for the Futhark Rune alphabet. I tried to find one for the longest time and couldn't.It's as close to accurate as I could get it. If you type R you're going to get the elder futhark character for R.
There are still a few things that couldn't be accomplished perfectly.
For example, if you want a th (ΓΎ) you need to type v. There is a t and an h in Elder Futhark, but there is also a character for th (ΓΎ). There is not a character for v, so I figured it was a good compromise.
Also C, K, and Q all use the same character (which is for K). I considered making C the same as S, since a C can sound like an S or a K in english depending on how it's used (It is a rather redundant letter) but went with K for the safe side. In general, just know that you probably don't need to write out a C for any reason with this font. It's a redundant character.
For more details on Elder Futhark, go here: [link]
The numbers are the Pentadic Rune Numerals. It was the system used in Scandinavia, usually in conjunction to runes. I went with it over the Roman Numerals because it seemed to fit better with the theme.

Edit - So a few people have pointed out a couple errors - which doesn't surprise me at all since I'm most definitely not an expert on runes, and was muddling my way through this with a few sites for references (a couple of which were slightly contradictory). I hope to go back and make a few changes at some point soon. I certainly never expected this to get near this much attention, so I didn't think it mattered too awful much if I made a mistake or two.
Anyway, thanks loads for the interest.

Minus the small inaccuracies, this will work quite nicely for my Legacy of Kain workings. Β Much obliged.

SLIGHTLY contradictory!!
This is fun and yes, there are errors but who cares?
I have , in the past managed to get my keyboard to print runes but, sorry, I can't remember how it worked.
Keep looking and thanks for the fun. I love the bottom line. Is some of it Ogham? Sorry, I won't live long enough to read all the replies so, if I repeat things you have already addressed, I apologise.
Blessed be,
Allen

Have not been studying Elder futhark long but I realised a few mistakes. In the word "Elder" you have spelt it Elmer. The D and M are very similar but the M has longer legs on either side. not sure but the S on is always sounds like a harsh S like in cousins so Algiz might have to be used. Also in Runes I don't think you need the E as it is silent.

To the upper-right side of the page is a Download link. It's just a ttf file- standard truetype font. Nothing special. Just install it the way you would any font. In win7, you can right-click and Install should be one of the options. In Mac you just double-click the file and then Install Font from the window that pops up.
For older versions of windows you have to drag the file into the fonts section of the control panel, or for really old versions of windows, you copy it into the windows/fonts directory.

I have 12 different variations of the runic alphabet in my folder right now o.o The saddest part? I just realized I've never seen the Scandinavian one you're talking about. Must. Go. Do. More. Research.

I used to too! We'd write our notes in several different alphabets, like "celestial", theban and two different runic alphabets. Talk about throwing the teachers for a loop. On actually called us a satan worshiper and told us we were writing in the devil's language and THEN told the principle she "feared for her life" because we were "threatening to murder her for a satanic ritual" in the note. Unfortunately, the vice principle was her husband and he took it seriously and, without them even bothering to look at the alphabet pages we printed off for him AND the translations we provided, we got suspended because of it -rolls her eyes-

It's really fun to do huh :] But I had close to the same problem where people would thing weirdly of the writing and call us freaks. I didn't have problems with the principal though. That sounds like it was pretty irritating...

MarinusLamia In reply to LunaDarasu [2012-05-03 02:25:29 +0000 UTC]
BEYOND irritating. They finally decided to end our suspension when our parents threatened to take them to court because 1. The alphabets were part of our religion and 2. The notes has absolutely 0 defamation and no threatening and didn't even say anything about the teacher other than discussing the assignment.

Well, it doesn't help I live in the bible belt lol. And it also didn't help that while the principle runs the school, the vice principal runs the disciplinary stuff. It also didn't help that the teacher is a huge bible thumper (who also hated me and my friends and constantly harassed us because we're pagan). And it DEF didn't help that her husband was the vice principle lol. so yeah, it was one giant fuck-fest of everyone's against you.

The teacher could have been fired. Should have been fired. Teachers have to be unbiased. And if a teacher is found biased and is giving students a hard time. They are breaking the teacher code. There is something of like an internal affairs group that deals with teachers breaking this code of conduct... Anyways she could still be fired if there is substantial evidence.
Just letting you know.

Oh, I'm more than aware of that. However, I grew up in rural Oklahoma in famer's country. Not much would have actually been done about it and the school board more than likely would have sided with the Teacher anyways.

Oh, sorry i didn't mean the school board. I meant an internal affairs group but for schools. I cant remember the name. But they deal with bullies, cyber-bullying, biased teachers and corrupted staff.
It's kinda new but all of us trying to become teachers have to learn about all the organizations out there.
There are hundreds of groups devoted to better teaching environments.

Write in Runes
It's worth mentioning that in actual runic writing, there is no punctuation (no , . ! etc) and you don't put spaces between the words.

lol - It's the ancient runes alphabet.
Used for proto-norse, old-norse, proto-germanic, Gothic, Alamannic, and sometimes even Latin. Very old writing system. Vikings used it.

It might be worthwhile to mention to anyone who wants to use these runes "properly", that Furthark does NOT use puncuation, and there are no spaces between words. There are also no such thing as double-letters or silent letters, therefor "book" should be "bok", etc. Itwillruninaconinuousstreamlikethis. Thanks for making this! (:

I occurred to me that maybe I should explain that the Prose Edda is "a collection of four sections interspersed with excerpts from earlier skaldic and Eddic poetry containing tales from Nordic mythology" - and was originally written in runes. Basically, the story of Odin, Thor, Frigga, Baldr, Loki, etc. I've got a copy of the whole thing in two forms - one version is translated into english but the other is the original language, but written with roman characters for readability. I just wanted a quicker way to put bits of it back into runes than doing it manually in photoshop using images of runes (which is actually how I did it for a while until I got too frustrated with the tedium and made myself a font)
