Description I've gotten a lot of questions these past few weeks about what exactly does a "storyboard artist" in tv animation actually do.

Well in short, we translate the script to what you see on screen. This encompasses everything from staging the characters and BG into compositions, acting, camera movement, lighting, fight choreography, etc.

I hope this clears it up.

If you ever want to learn how to do this, I teach this and more over at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena every semester. (Shameless plug, I know....)

Like a visual or graphic step-chart that a writer would make to outliine a genre novel and describe its dramatic curve? Or a screen play? Not the actual end product, but a good description of it for the finishers to work from?

Thanks for sharing these. They're fantastic. I really enjoyed the movie BTW. Great work all round!

Just out of curiosity, on an animated show like this one how is the distinction made between what a director does and what the storyboard artist does? Seems to me if the storyboard artist envisions the staging, camera shots and action sequences, they're effectively directing the show, no?

I ask because I've 'boarded a couple of episodes of a locally-produced 3D animated TV show and while I worked with a director, I was responsible for pretty much everything you described. And the director in the end basically went "yeah, great job, this is what I had in mind!". Which left me wondering. It's been my one and only storyboarding experience, so I don't know if this is the norm in animation. Is it?

The Director is responsible for the entire show. If the storyboards aren't working, they have to step in and make it work. You have to remember that the director also works with the character designs, BGs, Prop, BG paint, ink and paint, the voice actor casting as well as directing the actors during the voice record, etc. As a board artist, you work with the designs given to you at the handout stage. The Director is the one responsible for getting those designs, audio track, and any other reference material ready in what he/she envisions for the show. If you have a good storyboard artist crew than your job is easy on the storyboard part, but if not, you have to be prepared to step in and re-board it all. Of course, if you have a good Director, he/she will give you good direction of what he/she wants for any particular sequence.

Directors have to deal with many things after the storyboard is done. Timing sheets, animation problems, music, foley (sfx), editing, are some of the other things the Director has to do before he/she is done with a particular episode or movie. It's very exhausting and extensive work.

I hope this clear is up and if you have any other questions just let me know!

So then, is Directing a natural career progression for a storyboard artist?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AZNbebop In reply to Dracowyr [2010-05-03 07:04:29 +0000 UTC]

yes. and from Directing that leads to Producing.

Dracowyr In reply to AZNbebop [2010-05-07 12:48:00 +0000 UTC]

But then...producers don't do anything

AZNbebop In reply to Dracowyr [2010-05-07 16:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Of course that depends on the Producer.

Very cool - thanks for answering! Yeah that definitely sheds a lot of light on the Director's role. I really appreciate the input.

It's kind of annoying that "storyboard artist" seems like the only category not included when you're posting art.

But seriously, these are fantastic, thank you for posting this series. In reference to your avatar -- when I was in school, one of my instructors actually worked for Filmation back in the day, and was part of the original MOTU crew.

Man, you are where I want to be

Awesome stuff, thanks for sharing! It's great to be able to see that standard that I need to aim for to be a story board artist myself.

It's also cool to see how faithful they were to your drawings

I want to say it now cause you mentioned it but the professional in me won't let me Cool boards though they translated well into the final shots. Did you eork on many of the sequences/scenes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AZNbebop In reply to Griff-84 [2010-03-31 19:24:25 +0000 UTC]

yes I worked on quite a few sequences. What you are seeing is just one panel of a storyboard that is probably 1000+ drawings.

I did a few scenes here and there as well as the main battle at the end of the film where the Justice League fight the Crime Syndicate on the their moon base.

The end of my section is where Batman steps thru the portal onto Earth Prime. That last sequence was done by another Storyboard artist.

thats alot of work, I thought the movie was pretty awesome your work is defo on point were you in charge on a specific character or did you board for the entire fight scene? If you did the entire sequence with all the characters, then fair play that is alot of character models and actions to keep up with. I have done some story boarding for a few projects myself for tv and some indie films over here, but I honestly find boarding for animation even animated shorts is alot more fun. You can be more expressive IMO?

AZNbebop In reply to Griff-84 [2010-03-31 20:11:19 +0000 UTC]

I basically did the entire sequence.

From the acting in the beginning set-up to the fight choreography between everyone.
