when i saw the amount of detail put in the grip alone, I got a nerdgasm... Since then my penis resides in a wheelchair (especially crafted for it...)

i agree with Torbsie--both on the wood and that i'm in no way one to talk but i notice that the handle of the katana and the blade don't exactly match up. they look squeejawed and off kilter just a tidge. the handle looks like it's twisted where the blade was left straight. maybe it's just me. but anyway, great pic! very realistic. ^^

At first glance I was like "geez another photo of another katana" but it's.. like.. 3D? O__O' Whoa.. You're crazy dude! Absolutely brilliant! I love the realistic hamon, and the detail you've put into everything in here. The menuki and every single detail looks too detailed to be true. Heck I have rarely seen as detailed REAL menukis! Magnificent work!

Wow, this was it.
Here the Tsukamaki looks perfect. And the Same-Hada is shiny like the skin of a serpent.
Also I like the colours you chose. Black and dark Red. Gorgeous.

I'm impressed with your materialing and texturing, however you should definitely work on your lighting here.

Have a nice day, Johnathan

Oh wow, the detail on the katana is just amazing. Especially the metal looks really good, it has a nice realistic texture and shinyness to it. Very nice, definetly worth all the time you've put into it.

Just like your other katana renders, this is great.

However, the perspective is a little odd. Also, the first inch of the inside of the scabbard is generally made out of a soft wood, not metal. That is so when the katana is in the scabbard the metal fight in front of the finger gaurd (name starts with an n?) and the wood press together and form a very tight seal. This is useful for two reasons: one, it makes it harder for the sword to fall out, and two, if made properly the seal is somewhat waterproof - which is important because the steel used for traditional katana's rusts extremely easily.

Just wow... I took a look at all three and you did a great job on them. I don't think I'm even qualified to crit this. But I do have to ask what program and HDRI you are using.

B0R In reply to AerosolFun [2005-11-19 23:21:26 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the C. happy you liked them

im useing maya and Rendering in Mentalray and just a little bit Photoshop for post.

and the Hdri is from a Dosch collection High rez. of about 6000x3000 (50 mb) .... i guess its worth the time for this high HDRI output.

thanks again, and keep watchin thanks.

AerosolFun In reply to B0R [2005-11-20 08:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I found those HDRs for $120... guess they must be worth it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

B0R In reply to AerosolFun [2005-11-21 02:40:51 +0000 UTC]

they worth it, i guess that talented people can get the same resultes with 5 MB HDRI, but.... Im not among them !

so, it takes realllllly long to render it, i use 2 pc's in a network render and it taked atleast 4 hours for normal high rez. image
( it really depend on the Scene ) but in any hdri scene it makes it 4 times slower !

Torbsie [2005-11-16 21:07:52 +0000 UTC]

Very EXCELLENT work.

I noticed you are looking for advanced critique. I am in no way one to speak here, but if you really want someone to point out any little thing that could make the image that much betterer... The wood on the sheath just ain't doing it for me, I think I am being a bit picky on this. It just seems a bit fake, compared to the ultra realistic metal, leather and fabric textures.
The other thing I see, but maybe its just my perspective is the sword doesn't seem to be sitting on the blade or on the handle. I know they are made to be perfectly ballanced but I think one end would end up resting, but maybe I'm wrong or maybe the blade is resting its just hard to tell.

These comments are WAYYYY Picky cause the image is VERY NICE as it is. Way out of my league. I only pointed those things out as I wanted to make a comment and you have this set for advanced comments. I hope my small critique may help to furhter this

thanks again, you been very helpful.
