Gorgeous rendition. Am seeking inspiration for a sword for a character in the piece I'm currently writing. Thank you, this is just stunning!

Great render! However, something subtle is off about the opening of the scabbard that spoils the illusion. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Maybe. The depth of field effect looks kind of odd.

Then we might have found the slight problem. Still beautiful though.

It's okay I don't need it now, although the image is very impressive I have found another which is more in line with the style of my book. Thank you for your reply though and I wish you great luck with any more pieces of art you submit.

It is a testament to your attention to detail that you made the ito alternating. Most katana models I see have just copy+pasted their ito crossovers down the length of the tsuka. I've made it a game to pay close attention to the ito of any model katana and see if it alternates or not. I believe yours is the first I've come across that does lol. Nice work! Don't suppose you take commissions?

I was thinking of posting your work, credited, on a Facebook page. Would that be possible?

Very Nice, yes it's a stainless looking blade but absolutely one of the best Katana renders ever you have a great sense of style on this. The 'traditionalists' may not approve but you did a very good job. btw that is coming from someone who has been making real ones for thirty years. Keep up the good work.
(hmmm gives me a few ideas. . .)

It's one of the best 3D models of a katana in all of dA, but a few points I noted (and the criticism only applies if you were going for an authentic nihonto look):
- The blade geometry looks more like a decorative stainless steel sword than an authentic nihonto. There millimeter thick part on the sharp edge in this render that looks machine sharpened and is not found in real katana, but it's REALLY accurately modeled if it meant to be referenced from a decorative sword.
- The hamon (or temper line) in this and the other piece are material-wise well done, but they too remind me of a non-authentic sword.
- The handle wrapping, while never perfect in real swords either, is very rarely that loose looking and overlapping.
- I have never seen scaled skin used as samehada under the ito, but it's a quite innovative design!
- I love the red part of the saya!
Overall it's a great piece IMO, but yes, I'd love to see you do a more "traditional" katana too, maybe look some reference from nihonto.ca or something! Thanks for posting this!

thanks for the detailed commen, and sorry for the very late response (been quite busy)
i think 90% of the refrences i used where decorative blades, i didnt really aim for a traditional or modern,
just wanted to create a blade and try to kinda design it myself but so it will also make sense.
thanks again
cheers

Some stretching in the texture of the handle wrappings but that's hardly noticable and tsuba seems to be welded on? tsuba (hand guard) is a removable part but other than that it is really great

This is amazing!
I don't use Maya or Mental Ray...I use 3D Studio Max and VRay. But even if I DID I don't think I could pull results like this O_O
Great job!
