Description In this ninth video in the masking series we will discuss, in the simplest terms, just one of the many different ways to achieve a near perfect and professional quality mask of human hair in Adobe Photoshop through use of the calculations command.

Though the subject image is simple due to the near white background these same basic principles can work just as affectively even if there is a more complex background.

Well technology has come long way in the 3 years since I have posted this. I have been able to reduce the file size of this video from 56 MB all the way down to a mere 17MB!

I hope this will allow those of you unable to watch it before to view it now.

this video is really good!!! I think this is actually the best tutorial on masking that I could ever understand. It's really clear and easy to follow. I always get really confused with layers, but this really helped a lot. And BTW. I really love your commentary, or what you call 'rambling'.kkkk

This is the most informative vid I've seen since I first started using Photoshop. I never even knew you could use shift+[ to change the hardness.... MAN, what a time saver that alone will be. And the idea to get rid of the fringe was pure genius! *smacks forehead*
Bravo, man... bravo!

I don't know why but there has been trouble with Flash files and DA for years. I'm sorry and I will see if I can fix the problem. Either way it most likely saved you a great day if needles yapping. The who movie from start to finish is almost an hour.

hello and really thank you for this diamond! If you have the full version working with sound, please upload it into another service so we can check it.
it really stops when the magic begins

Again thank you , this is really rare to find

It's been some time since you left this message but I have re-rendered the original movie and uploaded it again.

You should be able to hear all the sound now.

Sorry that the file was broken when you first tried to view it.

dub72 In reply to BarryKiddPhotography [2008-05-01 17:07:23 +0000 UTC]

yes, it now works
thank you for this technique although I still have one question. Some of the hair still end with white fringe and are not that smooth as the rest of it.
Is there a way to fix this or should I just burn them and then apply minor blur on them?

cheers.

BarryKiddPhotography In reply to dub72 [2008-05-01 17:28:30 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps contracting just a bit tighter then burning with a brush in overlay will do it.

This is amazing! It works great! I never knew there was such a use for the calculations!

Sadly, the sound tunes out half way through the match color part, so I never got to hear beyond that...

Great job! Keep up the good work! ^_^

But at some point the sound stopped, and without your guiding voice i couldn't seem to understand the rest.

For some reason, the sound went out at the point when you were doing the color match--so I couldn't quite follow how you fixed the hazing problem. I was loving the tutorial until then! Could you note me if the sound gets fixed?

I'll look into it and re render it if need be.

For some reason the video runs perfectly fine until 'section c' where it keeps on cutting and having to load every few seconds so I was unable to watch that part.
So far it was really good though. I love all of your video tuts. hehe.

aerograph+mask? I'm not familiar with it. It is a program - a technique? I think I am off to search the web and see what I can find.

Thanks for the comment,

Barry

ravishankra In reply to BarryKiddPhotography [2005-05-10 14:36:19 +0000 UTC]

i make a selection around the wanted part of the original picture, like you, then create a mask layer (after an inverse selection of course)

after making this hard transition i make the transparent transition by drawing the border of my picture (in mask mode) with aerograph and tablet for having a nice progressive transparent... (the same as making compact selection + feather)

then the mask has a soft variable transition between image and the mask layer
so, you could play with the "flow" option of aerograph to fit the perfect need for the different parts of the picture

anyway your technic is much more helpfull for my need as i'm not a good drawer ;D

my english sucks a bit sorry
