Description
Normal Monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh are among the most basic features of the game. There have been plenty of different attempts to try and make Normal Monsters more viable and the majority have been rather functional. A few well known examples include "Rescue Rabbit" and "Painful Decision". However, I wondered how I could take these rather basic cards to the next level, so I devised something that could "Unleash" their full potential (Pun completely intended with zero regrets ). Artist's Note: I actually made the template for this card about a year ago, long before I thought about joining Deviantart. It was also my first crack at making my own custom mechanic, and by far my favorite.Unleash Summoning is a Summoning method of my own design that involves a specific Normal Monster(s) you control. The Normal Monster(s) in question, hereby referred to as "Unleash Material(s)", is/are placed underneath the Unleash Monster much like an Xyz Summon. Unleash Monsters go in the Extra Deck, also like Xyz Summoning, so what's different? First off is that if you control more than one of the Unleash Material monster listed on the Unleash Material, you can use as many as you want for the Unleash Summon. For example, to Unleash Summon our example card, "Blackland Terror Dragon" you can Normal Summon a single "Blackland Fire Dragon" and perform the Unleash Summon with that. However, if you use something like "Rescue Rabbit" or another method to get two "Blackland Fire Dragons" on the field, you can use both for the Unleash Summon of the single "Terror Dragon". Also, due to the nature of how these monsters are summoned, the effects tend to be pretty powerful and unique, so you can only control 1 Unleash Monster on your field. The cyan blue Level stars are the Unleash Monster's Absolute Level. The monster still is treated as having a Level, however that Level cannot be altered. Along with this restriction, Unleash Monsters cannot be used as Material for a Special Summon where Level is taken into account. For example, "Blackland Terror Dragon's" Absolute Level is 5 so it is still treated as a Level 5 monster, so it is still affected by cards like "Ophion" or "Crimson Blader". However, you can't use a card like "Star Changer" or "Galaxy Queen's Light" to alter its Level. Also, you cannot use an Unleash Monster for a Synchro Summon, Xyz Summon or Ritual Summon because they all involve Level manipulation. You can still Fusion Summon or Tribute Summon with an Unleash Monster so long as the Summon doesn't take specify their Materials' Levels.
If that seemed like a lot of information, I apologize but I've put a lot of thought into this mechanic. These last few tidbits are more thematic: Unleash Monsters are always 1 Level higher and have 500 more ATK and DEF than their Unleash Material. The original purpose of this method was to make old barely-played cards more viable, hence this card requiring a card as old as Blackland Fire Dragon to summon it. We have a metric ass-ton of old Normal Monsters that nobody has even considered using since the 90's. Unleash Monsters do just that: Unleashing the true potential of these dust-ridden cards. I understand that it may not be that feasible to invest so much in a card that can only be used for 1 purpose by itself, but the trade-off is meant to be in the effects. I believe the Yu-Gi-Oh community is creative enough to integrate extremely old cards into a working Deck and Unleash Monsters are the reward for such creativity. "Terror Dragon" as an example practically forces your opponent's monsters to either attack or suffer the consequences, which can be detrimental if that monster relies more on its effects than its stats. This is only a hint at what this summoning method could do, but with proper support and a welcoming player base I think Unleash Summoning could rival that of our current Extra Deck lineup.
And who knows, maybe we'll figure that out soon...
Artist's Edit: The original design for this card was a Series 3 card with a shifted hue. I wanted to bring a little bit of the original design into this modern interpretation by changing the effect border to blue. The original hue shift made the border blue before I knew how to change it myself. Also, I decided to have Blackland Fire Dragon next to its Unleash Monster to give a better visual representation of what I wanted to accomplish. Personally, I think I found a pretty good picture of what I wanted to accomplish.
Blackland Terror Dragon (DARK)
Absolute Level: 5
[Dragon/Unleash/Effect]
Lore: "Blackland Fire Dragon"
Face-up Attack Position Effect Monsters your opponent controls cannot activate their effects while this face-up card is on the field. During either player's turn, you can detach 1 Unleash Material from this card; change 1 face-up Defense Position monster your opponent controls to Attack Position. Its ATK becomes 0 and it cannot attack or change its Battle Position until the End Phase.
ATK: 2000 DEF: 1300
I do not own the artwork (which belongs to its respective owner/s), the game of Yu-Gi-Oh (which is © of Konami and Kazuki Takahashi) or the template I used to make this. I made this using a Series 9 version of Magic Set Editor that I have heavily customized with a little help from Photoshop.

Imagine Unleashing a limb of Exodia, or something as trolly as Little D or Happy Lover. "Big D" and "Scolding Demon" anyone? I *personally* would love to see Konami finally pay more attention to Summoned Skull, and I think the thematic reasoning behind Unleash Summoning would be parallel to the ritual-based (not the YGO mechanic, I mean "Summoned" Skull) and demonic artwork. It'd be the kick in the pants Summoned Skull really needs to become an archetype. I support this, excellent work making an entirely new kind of card with the power of your imagination, too bad Konami's not nearly as good as you are, these days *cough* Link Summoning *hack* Pendulums *gag* Gatling Ghoul.

This would be a brilliant way to bring back the original cards, where you would have to sacrifice monsters just to get cards with decent ATK and/or DEF that you see on low-level monsters nowadays.

Both the concept of Unleashed Monsters and the design of this card are amazing. Good job!
