I hear that...I often try to support the galleries of beginners who seem to create planets far better than what I could do after that same amount of attempts, But I have known from the very start how to light a planet correctly and I wonder how newbies can do a good job on the texturing, yet F**K up the lighting sooo wrong !, even after dozens of attempts.

I have noticed though, that no matter where the light is coming from, the ends of the shadows always touch the poles, but some will do either what you labelled as "evil" or do the same where they create the inverse cresent ( or "Gibbous" ) phase and they end up with that same circle, just with the white and black inverted.

Well this is starting to turn into a rant rather than a comment, but my only critique here is that the text hurts the eyes to read due to it being overly bright against the black backround. I have been told many times that using black on white or vise-versa can really make it hard to read...It may be easier on the eyes if the text was a light grey instead of pure white...But still, many more need to see this !

I only made a comment on someone who did incorrect lighting just before finding this, But from now on I'll lead people to this...Because it dosn't even take professional skills or fancy programs to understand and use this tutorial.

Exactly, I wanted to make something that was accessible to everyone, no matter which program they use. Together, we can make a difference! (wow that was corny)

Now I remember why I do my planets in a fully 3d program- errors like those although not always as drastic, are all over the place...

Alas, not everyone has a 3d program, or wishes to use one. I'm actually thinking of expanding this to make it more in- depth.

I am really amazed at how much some of the 2d created images 'appear' 3d - I tried that early on with the Gimp, with little success, although I did create one with the sun supernova and parts of it had hit the planet that actually looked ok... (if I had just done a better 'space' behind it I'd have been much happier)....

Practice makes perfect, right?

Does indeed - (which obviously means you've practiced a WHOLE LOT more than I have )

Almost anyone can get there eventually, don't worry about it

Well working in 'true' 3d of Blender solves all of the lighting issues for my planets, but it makes having a good 'space' background so much harder.

bloknayrb In reply to SiathLinux [2007-08-09 02:03:31 +0000 UTC]

Well you can always use Blender for the planets and photoshop or something for everything else, no?

I've been using DAZ|Studios for some models it has - importing them into Blender- creating a scene of planets, ships, and such and the finishing it with The Gimp for the backgrounding.

Please further enlighten the uneducated crowd. Blah the poles thing really annoys me, too. I don't like it either when planets have conflicting lighting set ups. Such as in this piece [link] the planet lit by the supernova should also be lit by the sun and the planets lit by the sun should be lit by the supernova as well.
Great tut!

Interesting... I've always admired his work so much that I never even bothered looking for errors, I just looked at what impressed me...
Thanks for the comment, and the watch! Funny, I thought I was already watching you, but apparently I'm not... easily corrected

Happens all the time to me, think I was watching someone but it turns out I wasn't. Even great works of art can have flaws. There are more flaws in his works, but I'm not going to point them all out, because my work isn't perfect either, far from it.
Thanks for the watch

It is always disturbing when somebody just plops a planet down regardless of the light source(s), this tutorial is a good reminder for people who do that.

Man i agree with you so badly on your first points about the poles, and how people often just arent thinking their work through.

Yeah, I've always wondered why I never saw it in any tutorial beforehand, I figured it was time.
