Description This was one of those funny, creepy images that just popped into my brain out of nowhere. But as I sat there drawing it, I started to imagine a whole story to go along with it.

Basically, this cute girl scientist has ventured into a cave to study spiders. But what she doesn't realize, is that the cave is also filled with all the skeletons of people who have wandered in here over the past couple hundred years, and gotten killed by the spiders. Our girl is so totally engrossed in all the fascinating specimens she's found - that she never notices that the skeletons have woken up... and are now emerging through the cobwebs to get her...

Maybe someday, after I finish all my other, current art projects, I'll draw a whole comic book about "Cobweb Cave". That would be fun. ...Maybe someday.

Ha! That's a fun take on it! If I ever get around to drawing a comic from this illustration (I've been working on some other comics stories lately that grabbed my attentions a little more strongly) I had a different story in mind but thanks for sharing your ideas!! I'm flattered my illustration inspired you to dream this up and write it to me. Great twist ending with the nature of the skeletons, too.

I'm just glad you enjoyed it

Normally I tend to focus on crime & murder mysteries in my writing, so taking on a horror piece seemed like a nice change of pace. I saw it as a fun little challenge, kinda like how some pulp fiction writers were shown covers by the publishers and told to write stories based on the cover image alone.

I don't think these skeletons are bad guys. They just want to rescue a fellow skeleton from its sexy prison. Bless their noble hearts. Amazing work as always.

My eyes are going everywhere from watching this image. I mean you can see the skeletons behind the girl the spiders, the webb, even some rocks sticking up, and it's such a creepy atmosphere, I love it <3
Also I really like how you draw hair and fingers, both on the girl and the living skeletons.

BryanBaugh In reply to ColinRichards [2012-02-29 19:38:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Actually the cobwebs were the fun part. Making the skeletons and spiders clearly visible (and keeping them from getting lost and turning into confusing shapes) among the cobwebs was the hard part.

There was an old book I picked up once at my library with a few Lovecraft stories (this being years before I bought the complete works of HP Lovecraft in hardcover form). On it was a mummified woman wrapped in spiderwebs in a crypt-like setting. Scared me half to death right there.

BryanBaugh In reply to GeotrixQueen [2012-02-26 21:46:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes that cover painting was by Michael Whelan. He was mostly a fantasy artist in the 80's... He did a lot of Tolkein kinda stuff. But then he did that one big wrap-around cover painting for a set of HPL books and it was like, WOW! He does horror even better than his usual fantasy art! But as far as I know, that was the only major horror art he ever did.

It was one large painting with several different scenes on it (the body wrapped in spider webs was only one section of the whole painting). I only know this because when I was in high school in the 80s', the first book of HPL I ever owned was a big thick, paperback collection, which had the whole painting wrapped around the front and back covers of the book. A couple years later, that same collection was broken up into a a series of short paperback books, each of which had a different section of the big painting, on each cover.

2nd link= epic book nightmares. I think Whelan also illustrated an Innsmouth religious ceremony on the inner cover of my book. It's pencilwork, but the detail is phenomenal.
