Hey - I wouldn't mind trying this, but I cannot find elliptic (or bipoler) in the transform editor. I have Apophysis 2.08 beta 2. Are they are plugin? If so, where can I get it?

You definitely don't need to render at dimensions that large!

RAM is getting less and less expensive these days. Perhaps you should look into an upgrade? (though you my need better processor speed to make it worthwhile...)

Could I do this tutorial using GIMP? Photoshop doesn't like me.
But anyhoo, it's a really great tutorial.

You should be able to. I haven't tried it, but I assume GIMP would have the necessary tools.

this is really cool but i have found that my computer just can't tolerate the selection process. that's where it locks up. and i have a reasonably young computer! I find it understandable w/ so many little spots to deal with.

How much RAM do you have? (I've got 2GB and it's no problem at all.)

I have 2 gb. for some reason complex images using GIMP gives my computer fits when selecting by color.

Maybe GIMP hasn't optimized for that yet. Just my guess.

Define "reasonably young"? And are you trying to do this with a fractal thats over, say, 4000 pixels on the long side? Is your video card correctly installed with current drivers? (Incase you aren't aware of it, video card drivers are improved over time to keep up with OS improvements, and this can mean that you have to update the drivers on an existing card.)

well it's a laptop I got for Christmas and it runs pretty strong. Haven t tried yet w/ this system but in the past trying to grasp images has caused me some problems.

How much RAM does it have, and if it came with programs pre-loaded, have you cleaned the junk out?
I ask because I always build my own comps and am very selective with what programs I load- my current one is almost 4 years old, running XP and has less than 1GB of RAM but can handle this operation just fine as long as I don't bump the size up to something too huge, say under 6000 pixels. [I'm in the process of building one that will be 64-bit and have at least 4GB of RAM to replace it.]
With a new laptop you shouldn't be having problems unless there is something wrong with your system. (If you need help troubleshooting this, feel free to note me.)

This could be an issue with the GIMP and your operating system, especially if you're using Vista, which I've been hearing reports of as being unfriendly to the GIMP. Have you tried any other editing software? If you're looking for free, check out paint.net.
The other possibilities are that your video card is not correctly working, or that you comp has RAM allocation issues and is considering the GIMP to be a non-priority RAM usage program. Or you have some conflicting plug-ins loaded into the GIMP itself.
With 2GB of RAM, you shouldn't be having this issue.

I saw you are a fan of D&D 2nd edition that's my fave. I use to have a first edition deities and demigods w/ the chuthlu myths included. I love that stuff but walking into the bookstore and seeing so many manuals just looks like too much. w/ 2nd edition it was like three? late into it maybe five? now it looks like 20.

I think you've forgotten the race and class supplements, the monstrous manual and the world books. I have most of them. But there do seem to be a LOT more books now, and were getting 4th edition this summer...I'm just not very happy with any of the 3rd Ed. or 3.5 stuff. It's too kiddy...
I'll have to see what they've done with Faerun in 4th before I decide to buy it....

let's see monster manual, players handbook, dungeon masters guide those were the core books of 2nd edition then later came the deities and demigods and fiend folio. thats I can recall. Last rolled the die way back in the mid 80's tho...

You're leaving out the Race /Class handbooks. (Off the top of my head without looking: Elves, Dwarves, Fighters, Mages, Priests, Thieves, Druids, I know there's a few more.)
And there's the four volumes of the Wizard's Spell Compendium, three of the Priest's Spell Compendium, four of the Encyclopedia Magica.
It doesn't take up as much room on my shelf as GURPS does, but there's quite a few books if you aren't playing AD&D bare bones style.
