Description I'm pretty new to DeviantArt, and people have been very kind so far. So I thought I'd do something for you guys! I've had a couple of people message me asking for a tutorial, and I figured I'd give it a try.

So, here's my cel-shading tutorial. Really basic, it's my first one and probably not very good/a little confusing, but I really tried to make sense, I swear. If you have any questions about something in the tutorial, please put them in the comments or message me and I'll try to clarify!

If you'd like to see a bigger version of the finished image from this tutorial, here it is -->

Hopefully the tutorial is useful to somebody!

Thanks,
-Jen

Edit: Thank you so much for the DD! I'm honored. I would have never expected to get one on my old FMA artwork, haha. It's been over a year since I made this tutorial, but I hope you fine people still find it to be helpful.

Incredible tutorial! Now if only I would get off of my lazy butt and attempt to make my Edward Elric drawings look like Edward Elric, and not some misshapen mass with a cowlick. xD

Quick question--what size brush did you use for the lineart? It's so crisp and wonderful~

Thank you! And haha, it's okay--it definitely takes a while to get him looking right. I was soooo bad at drawing him when I first started. And for the lineart, it all depends on how large I scanned the picture, but typically I set the brush to 4 px or 5 px. c:

Well, you certainly have him spot-on now. xD I actually thought for a moment that the picture of him winking in the rain was drawn by the anime artist and reuploaded onto dA! Thanks for the reply--I'm always anxious to see how other artists set their brushes when they draw, so that I can note how large to make my own. ^^

Wow, just wow! I don't think I fully appreciated this art until now. I mean, I've loved anime for years, and I always enjoyed its style, but I don't think I understood all the fine details, all the subtleties that goes into making something like this. You've opened my eyes! Fantastic tutorial! It has me just itching to try something like this! I've been coloring my stuff on picnik.com (i don't know if you ever heard of it), because I've been too afraid to touch my CS5, but you've really encouraged me! Great job!

Ah man, thank you. I'm really glad you enjoyed the tutorial. c: I know digital art can be a bit intimidating, so I tried to make it a bit friendlier to approach. Yes, I've heard of picnik! I've never used it, but I see you've done quite well using it with your art. You have a lot of digital coloring skill already, so you'll probably learn Photoshop pretty quick and your work will be even better. Best of luck!

I have to say, this tutorial is one of the best I've seen. For anything, not just cel shading! I used your wise words of wisdom and incorporated the cel shading techniques used here into my own style and made this: [link] I know it's not nearly as good as your own artwork, but I worked really hard on it, and I just wanted to let you know that your tutorial was of great help to me.

LackadaisicalLeopah [2011-07-26 15:29:32 +0000 UTC]

Wait, I have another question. On my Photoshop (CS3 Extended), if I try to color stuff beneath the lineart layer, it won't show up at all. So what should I do?

I've tried to color things like that to make them neater, but since it's below the lineart it won't show up unless I put it OVER the lineart layer, and that colors the whole dang picture. So I have to color everything on the final lineart, and it's irritating.

CalamityChemist In reply to LackadaisicalLeopah [2011-07-27 02:51:03 +0000 UTC]

I think that all depends--is the lineart you're trying to color on its own layer, or does it have a white background? If it's lines that you've scanned in (like, lines you've done on paper and want to color digitally, which I often do) then what you need to do is set your lineart layer to 'multiply'. There should be a drop-down list in the layers palette that says "Normal", and if you click on that and select 'Multiply', you should be able to color under your lineart. c:

LackadaisicalLeopah In reply to CalamityChemist [2011-07-27 03:37:39 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I'll try that.

This is pretty much how I start a drawing:
1. Begin "Layer 1"
2. Sketch the drawing in red.
3. Begin "Layer 2"
4. Trace over the red with black.
5. Begin coloring.

And I have no idea why it won't let me color lineart unless it's on the same layer. :/
