Description
I'm pretty new to DeviantArt, and people have been very kind so far.So, here's my cel-shading tutorial. Really basic, it's my first one and probably not very good/a little confusing, but I really tried to make sense, I swear. If you have any questions about something in the tutorial, please put them in the comments or message me and I'll try to clarify!
If you'd like to see a bigger version of the finished image from this tutorial, here it is -->
Hopefully the tutorial is useful to somebody!
Thanks,
-Jen
Edit: Thank you so much for the DD! I'm honored. I would have never expected to get one on my old FMA artwork, haha. It's been over a year since I made this tutorial, but I hope you fine people still find it to be helpful.

Question do we have to use 9 px brush over the sketch? Or we can use a 1px brush?

I've been searching/reading cel shading tutorials for the past half an hour and I have to say, this is the most helpful one so far! The fact that you used Edward as your example doesn't hurt either haha.

Yes, people can produce similar artwork with Paint Tool SAI--but the process is a little different.

I have been trying to figure out how to work in that style and now I can try to learn from this a little more!

Wow, this tutorial has been amazingly helpful! This is literally the only page on dA I actually have bookmarked in my browser
Just one super minor thing though... what you're doing with the layers is actually called clipping (i.e. the top layer is a clipping mask of the one below it). Grouping layers is just a way of organizing them. Anyways, thanks again for the amazing tutorial! Your technique for coloring eyes is awesome!

CalamityChemist In reply to liquidxero [2012-04-02 03:07:27 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a ton! I'm very happy it's helped you out. Yes, I found out later it's called clipping! In Photoshop Elements, the program I used when I made the tutorial, the function is called 'grouping' instead of clipping, for some reason. In Photoshop CS5, which I use now, it is called clipping (and the organization is called grouping, like you said). I'm glad you like the tutorial!

That is so cool I wish I could do it, but since I barely understood half of the stuff on there I probably won't. You must have some insane patience.

How do you make your lineart smooth??? I draw them quickly, but there are still bumps, and they look jagged
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CalamityChemist In reply to PhantasselArt [2012-01-25 06:03:03 +0000 UTC]
It takes a lot of practice! I'm still learning, too. Lineart can be really frustrating. One thing I do is, instead of using motion from my fingers or arm to move the pen, I do broad, quick sweeps from the wrist. That means I mess up a lot and some of the lines don't fall quite right, but I just undo and try again when that happens. For a while shapes might look sort of wiggly and not as smooth as you want, but as you practice drawing straight lines and smooth curves, you will get a lot better. c: I hope that helps!
