Description I'm pretty new to DeviantArt, and people have been very kind so far. So I thought I'd do something for you guys! I've had a couple of people message me asking for a tutorial, and I figured I'd give it a try.

So, here's my cel-shading tutorial. Really basic, it's my first one and probably not very good/a little confusing, but I really tried to make sense, I swear. If you have any questions about something in the tutorial, please put them in the comments or message me and I'll try to clarify!

If you'd like to see a bigger version of the finished image from this tutorial, here it is -->

Hopefully the tutorial is useful to somebody!

Thanks,
-Jen

Edit: Thank you so much for the DD! I'm honored. I would have never expected to get one on my old FMA artwork, haha. It's been over a year since I made this tutorial, but I hope you fine people still find it to be helpful.

It's nice to see a tutorial that shows layer grouping.

Thanks man. c: It's one of the most useful aspects of Photoshop, I think, but a lot of people tend to look over it.

Why don't you use the magic wand instead of the Poylygonal lasso? It seems pretty time consuming to me to draw the selection around the front hair.

I've found that, personally at least, the polygonal lasso helps me keep more accurate lines. I use the magic wand tool for small, tight areas, but prefer the polygon function for any linear stretches or large areas.

Ok, personnally I use the magic wand for all the main flat colors at the begining. I select every zone and I expand the selection by 3 pixel just be sure that when I fill it will go under the lineart. It seemed to me pretty tedious to trace with the lasso over line when I saw your process. But it seems to work well for your. Good job !

well the final result looks very professional (:

I scanned in the drawing, then I used my Wacom tablet to make lineart over it with the brush tool, yep!

An alternate to using clipping mask is to lock the layer's transparency. that way the only thing touched is the pixels. But to each is own

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CalamityChemist In reply to firstdondiego [2011-02-10 22:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Yep! I used that in the tutorial. I just prefer to be able to edit my shadows on their own layer. c:

SophieDragon In reply to ??? [2011-02-04 15:31:11 +0000 UTC]

I always wondered how people did the really clean drawings like this. I love it, thanks! Though I have a question for you. What do you have your layers set to? Im a noob in photoshop and Ive been playing with different things. Do you have them set to multipy or normal settings? Thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CalamityChemist In reply to SophieDragon [2011-02-04 19:06:23 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it--thank you! With this particular kind of shading, all the layers are set to 'normal'. This is because my lines are on their own layer (I do them digitally) so I can paint underneath them with no trouble. However, if your lines are drawn traditionally and scanned, set the layer to 'multiply', then paint underneath, on 'normal' layers. c: Hope that helps!

From your point of view, do you think this would be a good method when doing animations?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CalamityChemist In reply to babytiara09 [2011-02-04 19:08:37 +0000 UTC]

I have used this style for a few animations and it worked out fairly well. c: If you can keep the shading consistent, then I'd say yes, it's a good method.
