hey thanks, and thanks for the devwatch too
3d is damn tough when you start out but youll make giant leaps from time to time if you keep at it. this model is built mostly from primitives (easier to manage high poly versions of them) but the shell is a hypernurbs slapped onto a very low poly model manipulated from a cube and the cogs are extrude nurbs. i could have used extrude nurbs for most of the leg pieces and sweep nurbs for the claws and the curved struts instead tho.

absolutely yes. the upper piston controls the angle of the claw, the lower piston controls the angle of the second leg segment, and that entire bit of each leg (up to the diagonal rings which are rigid and attached to the black inverse cog) can move back and forth thanks to a series of cogs controlled by a motor at the top of each leg. thats all thats needed for this kinda thing, so i didnt add anything to make the legs tilt from side to side. theyre attached to a rigid frame where the pneumatic tanks, compressors, and batteries are and the various tubes for the pneumatics are inside the metal structure for protection (thats primarily what the diagonal rings are for). the head also moves up and down thanks to a piston and it tilts up and down via a hinge on the back and another cog system rotates that entire assembly from side to side just within the shell there.
i havent set up bones or constraints for the model cos i dont really know what im doing with that stuff yet, so animating it would be a total bitch. it would work tho.
