Description
I don't know where I got the idea to do this, but here it is anyway. It's supposed to be some blobs of mercury on a glass-topped black tabletop.Modeled & rendered in Cinema4D. Render time for the print version was 9 hours because I forgot to turn down some of the settings.
Full version is 1920x1200 and available via the download link.

Hehe yea I did consider making it try to form into some sort of shape but that was too much of a clichΓ©. Glad you like it

I do really like it. The mercury could be more silverish, maybe? At first I thought it was water, and only then read the description. Really nice work altogether, though, I enjoy clean textures. One of my new wallpapers for sure!

It actually has a chrome material applied so it is as reflective as it gets. The problem is that the background had to be quite dark or it wouldn't have the look I was after, so I had to compromise and light it from a certain angle.

Fair it is. I guess that it's just an illusion since the background is grey/silver, as well as the spills.

Yea, it makes the liquid look less reflective than it is. Originally I wanted a blacker background but that made the pic feel too empty, even tho it would have increased the contrast in the reflections.

I still think it's a good work, maybe you should try putting the rendered picture through one of those `metallic' effects?

Ooh, no, I don't like those things. They always increase the contrast too much and pixellate the lines between light and dark. All I'd have to do to make it look more shiny is change the lights a bit but every time I do that I spend another ten hours fiddling with it because it never looks quite right. I'll probably do a few more with molten metal at some point tho..

Thanks
I'm on a Mac Pro with 4 3ghz Xeons (2x2core), 5 gigs of RAM, and the ATI Radeon x1900. It's about 2 years old now but still a real powerhouse, and I'll probably double the cores and stick another 4 gigs of RAM in once I get some cash. Should end up being a lot cheaper than buying one of the newer models with comparable CPU power.

Wow...that's insane, what's your average render time?

There is no average since it changes so completely from one scene to the next. Print renders (12000x9000 pixels) take between 45 mins and 48 hours so far, and desktop sized ones take between 3 mins and about 10 hours.

Awesome! I don't plan on rendering 12000x9000 pixels anytime soon, only average wide screen film size. (16:9)

Yea, the largest size is slight overkill really heh.
